Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1 - A sweater-clad youngster builds a snow polar bear in this nearly wordless book. That night, as she sleeps, the sculpture and her white teddy come to life. After a nightlong frolic with a number of polar animals, she awakes in the morning, teddy in arms, in her own bed. Of her snow bear, nothing remains - but the footprints leading away from the spot where he sat certainly give an equivocal message about reality. The colored-pencil illustrations in white, gray, and ice blue are spellbinding, rendering changes in an almost Escherlike manner. The sense of volume, form, and texture is beautifully wrought in artwork that spills across the spreads, leaving only the right margin of the recto open. Small black-and-white drawings in that margin propel the action forward. Given the artistic excellence of the production and the clear child appeal, the detailed English/Spanish instructions to parents for use of the book (amounting to a veritable lesson plan) and the appended poem seem to be nothing other than shallow excuses for marketing the book as bilingual. No parent needs to be told how to approach this book with a child, and the shallow prose poem in no way measures up to the spell created by the art.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exercise in creative thinking - fun book, December 27, 2004
This review is from: Polar Slumber/Sueno polar (Bilingual) (Hardcover)
A very unique book, "Polar Slumber" has no words in the main part of the book. Instead it tells a story simply by following the illustrations. What story does it tell? That is where it gets interesting. I had several people look at it and tell me what they thought was happening and all, young and old alike, had some very different and insightful differences. This is a book for stretching the imagination of children and adults and was a lot of fun. Beautifully illustrated, the "story" seems to draw you in. "Polar Slumber" is a highly recommended book for anyone who wants something to "read" that is sure to spark conversations, opinions, and imaginations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Virtually unique as a completely wordless picturebook, August 15, 2004
This review is from: Polar Slumber/Sueno polar (Bilingual) (Hardcover)
Dennis Rockhill's Polar Slumber/Seuno polar is virtually unique as a completely wordless picturebook that tells the wonderfully entertaining story of a sleepy little girl, a backyard snow bear, and a dreaming fantasy of a journey together through frozen landscapes and exotic creatures. All of which fade away with the coming of morning. The artwork is of museum quality and the imaginative and magical story is utterly charming. Polar Slumber/Seuno polar is very highly recommended, especially for children preschool through first grade!
