Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

The polar bear is a cunning predator, hunting seals, walruses, and beluga whales. The females are also conscientious mothers, playing with, teaching, and disciplining their cubs for the two and a half years before they are weaned. This slender volume is packed with information about these beautiful and powerful animals. Written by noted researcher Nikita Ovsyanikov (who set up the famous polar-bear-viewing camp in Manitoba, Canada), the text is learned yet accessible, and bear lovers of all ages will appreciate the dozens of gorgeous photographs. --C.B. 4.0 out of 5 stars Dispelling myths, July 19, 2008

I was pleased with this book. I ordered it following two recent incidents where small hungry polar bears took refuge on the north coast of Iceland after swimming for days in the freezing Arctic Ocean. They were greeted by people ignorant of their plight and nature and summarily shot.

This book is an excellent source of basic information about the nature of the polar bear and its exploitation by man. The minister for the environment in Iceland will receive a copy as a gift from me next week. I hope it can make a difference for other polar bears that stuble upon Iceland's coastline in future.

5.0 out of 5 stars short, but full of information, January 2, 2008

This is a short book on the lives of polar bears, but it covers everything and is excellently written. The pictures are wonderful, but the most important part is really the most informative text which fortunately is worlds removed from the musings of many of the coffee table books on polar bears.

Highly recommmended for people with a minor as well as a major interest in polar bears or the arctic. I think the book is also suitable for children 12 or older.
