Solid frame bike that is a great value for the price. Rear deraileur, rear hub and twist shift brakes are shimamo Tourney. Rear Shock is adjustable.Cons: Bike really needs to be set up when you receive it. I ended up re-adjusting the brakes (which are probably the weakest piece of the bike from a spec standpoint), tighting and then truing the spokes. I also had to adjust the rear derailler to get it to shift to the last gear. I enjoy doing this, so not a big deal. If you don't, pony up another $150 and get a bike from a Bike store that will do it all for you (and most will tune it again in a year for free) Once all set up, it again is solid value for the price. I was looking at a schwinn in Target that was only slightly better for almost $90 more. We'll see how the brakes perform and maybe drop $30 (getting a set of Avid's) replacing those down the road. I bought a Trek last time for him and although I love the Trek, until kids get to the age where they can ride an adult bike, its just not worth spending $500 on a bike that they are going to outgrow so fast. They abuse bikes, and I don't want to scold the kids for riding home for dinner and throwing the bike down.

Just purchased for my 12yo. He absolutely loves it. Setting up the Shimano drive was a little hard, after two hours I still wasn't able to get the first gear to work properly (first time setting one up). Besides that, the shifting is smooth on the other gears. It has excellent brakes and nice meaty tires. The bike seems very sturdy in constuction and will most likely hold up to the abuse that most 12 year olds dish out. I rode it myself, felt a little on the small side and the front shocks seemed to give quit a bit and I'm only 5' 11" at 180lbs (maybe better for kids and not for most adult men). I think it's a very nice bike overall, especially at $[...] bucks.

Seems like it will be good - IF THE RIGHT PEDALS WERE IN THE BOX!,

This seems like it should be a nice bike for my 9-year-old son - it was easy to put together, minus one problem - the wrong size of pedals were included in the box. I went to screw them on and they just slipped right inside the shaft - obviously too small. I called the BikeAid number on the box and they were quick to say they'll ship us out replacement pedals (I have a suspicion my call wasn't the first of this kind). Had I put this together before my son's birthday it wouldn't have been a major problem, but since I waited until his birthday to put it together and in order for him to have his present I had to run to REI and buy a twenty dollar set of pedals that were the correct size.So my advice would be: PUT THIS BIKE TOGETHER AS SOON AS YOU RECEIVE IT - or at least get out the pedals and make sure they're going to fit (and if they don't fit then call BikeAid and have them ship you the correct size). I would hate to have been a parent putting this together on Christmas Eve and found this out and have had a sad son, who couldn't ride his new bike, on Christmas morning.

After reading about this bike and seeing the reviews were favorable, I bought it. I have it now and have set it up. I do not like how the handlebars attach to the steering stem. A Wal-Mart bike has a more traditional steering stem set-up that is beefier and cheaper. Mine also did not come with the correct pedals so I will have to call them. The bearings have minimal grease and I suggest lubing all of them when you get it. Would I buy it again? No.
