The PDV-0820 portable DVD player from Polaroid Electronics lets you enjoy your movies, music, and digital photos when you're on the road or relaxing in the comfort of your own home. Its autosensing power adapter (AC 100 to 240V, 50/60 Hz) makes it perfect for international use, too -- a great companion for business or pleasure. The book-thin, MP3-friendly player features a broad 8-inch LCD configured in a widescreen (16:9) aspect ratio whose dimensions closely approximate those of your favorite contemporary movies. It conveniently swivels 180 degrees, enabling you to get the best view wherever you are. It's also compatible with most gaming systems (optional adapter required).

The PDV-0713A also offers built-in stereo speakers for headphones-free listening, picture zoom, and compatibility with DVD-Video, CD-R, CD-RW, and MP3-encoded discs -- not to mention digital photos stored as JPEG images on recordable CD (you can rotate and zoom on these, as well). Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio output (through a .125-inch minijack-to-RCA coaxial cable, not supplied) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver.

Use the supplied AV interconnects to hook the player up with your television and/or stereo system. Playback options include frame-by-frame slow motion, forward and reverse play, and multiple-angle viewing (with applicable discs). Headphones are not included, though you do get a handy splitter for listening with a friend.

A supplied rechargeable lithium-ion battery keeps your discs spinning for three to four hours between charges, and the player also comes with separate AC and DC power adapters for use indoors, in cars and boats -- you name it.

Bought one of these puppies for a car trip - very nice screen in the store, nice feature set, reasonable price. Weird controls - volume is via a wheel on the main unit; can't be adjusted using the remote control. Worked great for the first few hours, and then the screen went haywire - everything (including setup screens) gets awful ghost images, all of the colors except yellow disappeared, etc. Tried checking all the setup screens, and reset everything to factory defaults, but it appears to be a hardware failure. Very disappointing to the kids, and to the drivers when it didn't act as a pacifier...

The price was reasonable compared to other products in this space, but the quality was awful.

Pros:

The swivel screen is very handy. It gives you lots of options for hanging it your vehicle. The player comes with a case specifically designed for hanging on the back of a headrest. Unlike other cases, this one is not bulky, and holds the DVD player flat. I have mine hanging upside down from the sun visor. You can press a button to rotate the image 180.

The unit also plays music CDs and MP3 CDs.

The battery back attaches to the bottom, so it doesn't interfere with the hinges of the screen. Most other DVD players have the batter in the rear, so you can't open the screen flat.

CONS:
The 8" screen looks great, but only from a certain angle. It's not the best for sharing. There were other players in this price range that had better viewing angles, but the convenience of swivel screen made me choose this model.

Reliability:

So far, everything works.
