5.0 out of 5 stars Great bang for the buck!
After a tremendous amount of research (both web & hands-on) and with extreme trepidation not buying a "named" unit.
I purchased this 3 weeks ago, primarily to entertain a young child travelling on a long trip overseas. The player has performed flawlessly while enduring multiple long flights, car rides and other events.
I have been impressed with the quality...

2.0 out of 5 stars Fragile Product by inept company
This DVD player is a better version of the Petters Company products. Prior to this version their products were faulty and generally very sensitive and fragile. This version seems to be less likely to fail after 50+ hours of use. HOWEVER:

2.0 out of 5 stars Fragile Product by inept company, March 24, 2005
This review is from: Polaroid PDV-1002A Portable DVD Player with Rotat ing 10 Inch LCD Screen (Electronics)
This DVD player is a better version of the Petters Company products. Prior to this version their products were faulty and generally very sensitive and fragile. This version seems to be less likely to fail after 50+ hours of use. HOWEVER:
The screen is very fragile and this portable DVD player obviously needs to be handled very carefully. I don't know about the rest of you, but I needed this DVD player for travel. How careful can you be to it while it is in a bookbag, backpack or purse?

The company, Petters is incompetant, and inept. After three months of negotiations after returning a defective DVD player to them, they lost my address, lost the DVD player I sent back, they sent me the wrong DVD player, they never sent me return labels for the initial DVD player, and I was forced to pay for the return process!! Besides being annoying, long, tedious and tiresome, this process was irritating and unnecesary.

If you for some reason need to return you DVD player, do not go through this company, as they are obviously still working out the kinks in customer service.

If your considering purchasing this product, keep in mind the company warrentee, and plan on getting a service plan or another product with better customer service to back it up. Also be aware of how little damage this item can take.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, April 1, 2005
This review is from: Polaroid PDV-1002A Portable DVD Player with Rotat ing 10 Inch LCD Screen (Electronics)
I bought this little unit for my children for Christmas, and within the first month, I would have given it five stars. At some brick-and-mortar stores you can still get the players with small screens, but when the screens are that small, any increase in size is significant. Anyway, this unit has a nice appearance, and gave us no problems when watching the DVDs.

However, after about a month and a half, the unit suddenly went dead. I tried contacting the company's on-line support, but repeated e-mails produced *NO* response. I finally called their support number, and was informed that the unit is no longer under warrantee, but that for a wee fee (about half price) they will replace the unit.

So, overall, I am pretty disappointed. Will I pay for a new unit? I just don't know, that's a lot of money for 1.5 months worth of DVD watching. Overall, I do not recommend this unit.

Also, if you DO get this unit, ignore the on-line support and call in right away, so you do not fritter away your warrantee time like I did!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great bang for the buck!, February 18, 2005
This review is from: Polaroid PDV-1002A Portable DVD Player with Rotat ing 10 Inch LCD Screen (Electronics)
I have been impressed with the quality & loudness of the speaker sound (although "The Wiggles" are not exactly the most robust test) as well as the brightness & clarity of the screen.
I was not thrilled with the instructions regarding battery usage (aka charging times & draining the battery), but for the price and the performance, I think as consumers you have to realize that compromises are part of getting a great price.
Quite frankly, the complaints of the reviewer about screen rotation & weight, while accurate in pointing out some of the product's limitations.....are, in my mind, extremely nitpicky when you are getting a 10 inch plus screen for the best price on the market.
This is no long-term use review....but after 3 weeks...this player has performed above and beyond for the price point and I would recommend to anyone looking to purchased a portable DVD player.

4.0 out of 5 stars Polaroid PDV-1002A Portable DVD Player, March 15, 2006

I bought this product to take with us on a family trip. Pro's: It is compact, and easily portable. The rotating screen can rotate all the way around and then fold flat against the DVD player, allowing it to be hung from/between car seats for easy viewing. Picture quality is great! Drawbacks: The battery did not last as long as the three hours it boasted, so my son was not able to watch his entire DVD on the plane ride. Also, it needs a protective case to avoid being dropped, scratched, or damaged in transit. Sound volume is not loud enough unless headphones are used.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Happy with this purchase, February 15, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Polaroid PDV-1002A Portable DVD Player with Rotat ing 10 Inch LCD Screen (Electronics)
I feel it is *Superb* Value for Money.

The LCD was remarkably bright and crisp even in daylight. Had no problem playing recordable DVD's.

Very good volume, can hear clearly from several feet away. Built in tiny speakers have very practically no bass of course, but the treble is crystal clear.

Included Remote, Carrying-case that straps to a car head-rest, car-power adapter are all bonuses.

The battery pack is almost the size of a paperback, and larger than I would have liked. However, it clips underneath the DVD player, and is not that heavy.

DVD's are going to be a whole lot earier to watch during my train commute on this Polaroid than my Dell Latitude D600 Laptop with it's 15" screen. The Dell is unfortunately only viewable from certain angles, but this has a much wider field of view.
Also, the Dell is hard to open fully in a cramped train seat (and I imagine coach seats). This player's display completely swivels around and you can just lay it flat on your seat, as if viewing the cover of a closed book.

Very Neat!

2.0 out of 5 stars A good value, but not a great one, February 3, 2005
This review is from: Polaroid PDV-1002A Portable DVD Player with Rotat ing 10 Inch LCD Screen (Electronics)
1. The screen only rotates to the left....not to the right. This is a serious limitation under many conditions.

2. Adding the battery significantly increases the depth of the player, from 1.2 inc. to almost 2 inches. It weighs the same as a light notebook with battery.

3. The battery has a caution to ONLY charge it FOR NO MORE than 8 hours, with other admonitions better suited to NiCad than Lithium ion...such as draining the battery before charging. Therefore, the cautions mean that you cannot leave the battery on the player with the player plugged in!!!

4. The cover over the playing compartment is alarmingly thin and does not engage with a very reassuring click. Important plastic latches are very very thin, such as that locking the unit down.

The player stutters when there is movement (brief and wide apart) when playing back DVDR.

I bought the dvd player to use on a long plane trip.I was inflight when I used the dvd player. I was very disappointed to find that the dvd did not load correctly. I got sound but no picture. I thought it was something that I was doing wrong. I attempted to access the dvd again when I arrived at my hotel room- to no avail. When I returned home, my husband was able to get it to work for awhile then he too was unable to get a picture. I returned it to the store within 30 days. Now I'm trying to find a light weight dvd player with at least a 10 inch screen and a decent battery- Wish me luck

I bought one in July. Less than two weeks later, it died. Amazon replaced it. The new one has worked (with the exception of periodically not wanting to read DVDs) until today, when it died as well. The unit is fully charged, I've replaced the battery, checked all of the connections...and I still get a "no signal" message. It's a dud. Don't waste your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best purchases I've made, May 1, 2005
This review is from: Polaroid PDV-1002A Portable DVD Player with Rotat ing 10 Inch LCD Screen (Electronics)
I've had mine for almost a year and I LOVE IT! I looked at a lot of portable DVD players before buying it, many of them much more expensive, but what sold me on this one was the size of the screen. Once I starting using it, I found it had many other features that I really like - the rotating screen, two earphone jacks, AV in and out. Because it was less expensive than the others, I thought the picture quality might not be that good, but it's excellent.

A previous reviewer complained about durability - let me just say that I take mine to the gym with me 2-3 times a week, which isn't exactly gentle treatment, and I've had NO problems whatsoever! I just prop it on the bookholder of the stairclimber or stationary bike and enjoy a movie while working out.

I agree that the sound without earphones isn't great, but I can live with that, since I'm usually using earphones with it.

Overall, a great choice!

5.0 out of 5 stars **** Incredible Deal !! ****, January 31, 2005
This review is from: Polaroid PDV-1002A Portable DVD Player with Rotat ing 10 Inch LCD Screen (Electronics)
I recently purchased this 10" Portable DVD Player and was extremely impressed with the quality (Picture & overall design).

The battery lasted about four hours, which got through 2 DVD's on the plane. It was also nice that this product has a tablet screen style. It lets you twist the screen competely around, and then place it back against the player. It is super thin and takes up hardly any room, which was great on the plane!

I was also pleasantly surprised that it came with a bunch of accessories, including a remote control, and a Li-Ion battery & Charger (Home & Car), and a car bag!! I didn't have to buy anything extra, except the DVD's.

I would highly recommend this product to anyone who travels or has children!!
