At less than 4 inches deep, Polaroid's PLA-4260 gas-plasma television fits easily just about anywhere--office, living room, home theater, or bedroom. The 42-inch widescreen TV offers 1,024 x 768 native pixel resolution, a 3,000:1 contrast ratio, and 1,000 cd/m2 (maximum) brightness produce clear, bright images from a DTV set-top box receiver's high-definition television (HDTV) programs, DVD movies, or digital photos from your computer. And, the set's convenient NTSC tuner brings standard-definition broadcast TV into your home or boardroom.

With a plasma screen you get vivid colors like you've never seen before, extremely wide viewing angles (160 degrees in this case, wider than viewing angles of many LCD screens), and easy placement due to a plasma monitor's slim profile--the PLA-4260 is a mere 3.6 inches deep, perfect for desk or wall mounting (desktop stand included). Brightness tends to be extremely uniform across plasma screens, which are also impervious to the picture distortion and negative color balances that afflict CRT monitors when placed near lighting or sound systems. You do, however, need to be wary of image burn-in (wherein long-held stationary images leave a permanent impression in the screen)--especially critical to keep in mind if you'll be using the set for PC work and viewing.

The set's 3D Y/C digital comb filter enhances NTSC (standard-definition) sources by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt). Picture-in-picture capabilities, with image swap, make it easy to view images from 2 inputs simultaneously.

To save space and minimize cable clutter, all audio/video inputs and outputs are connected via a separate, stand-alone media center/set-top box, which links to the TV with 2 proprietary multi-pin cables (supplied).

The media center's 11 inputs include 3 each composite-video and S-video, 1 analog RGB (15-pin D-Sub, for your PC), a direct-digital DVI-HDTV with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection), 2 component-video inputs (1 HD, 1 SD), an RF coaxial/antenna input, and an RS-232C control interface (RS-232 cable not included).

If you don't have a surround receiver or 6-channel speaker setup for use with your DTV receiver or DVD player, you can still make every movie night the ultimate movie experience: onboard SRS TruSurround XT simulates surround sound through the set's 2 speakers. A dedicated monaural RCA subwoofer output facilitates hookup with a stand-alone powered speaker designed to extend the low-frequency response of your listening system.

We have had this for almost 6 months now, bought it after we bought a 26 inch polaroid tv for the bedroom. Note: we got the 42 inch Polaroid MONITOR which needs a cable box, it is not a ready to plug in tv. We needed the cable box anyway for HD transmission where we are. I have to tell you we love it. My husband is now hooked on HD and the Polaroid was a superb value. Granted, we got it at Circuit City for under 1700.00!!!!! I don't know how we lived without it!
