This package (Polaroid USB Stick Battery Charger with Batteries) contains an USB-powered battery charger for AA/AAA cells. It sounds very convenient to use, because you can insert it into any USB port to recharge your batteries. However, the charger is very primitive and has no charge-termination mechanism at all. It simply charges the batteries at a small current of around 100mA. The red LED lights remain on FOREVER, regardless of the status of batteries.

Another problem is the long charge time. At 100mA current, it will take at least 21 hours to fully recharge the two 2100mAh AA batteries included in this package. For higher capacity batteries (such as 2500mAh) the charge time will be more than one full day.

As a general guideline, AC-powered chargers can recharge mush faster than USB-powered chargers. For example, consider the Sony Cycle Energy BCG34HLD Charger. It is a true 'smart' charger in that it monitors the status of each cell during charging, and stops once the cell is full. Its charging current is higher at 360mA, which means it takes 6-7 hours to recharge AA cells.

Most 'USB stick' chargers in this price range are just as dumb as this Polaroid charger. Previously I have tested the Sanyo NC-MDU01 USB Charger and liked it very much. It is a smart charger, and it charges much faster in just 3-5 hours.

I bought these as an alternative to the expensive batteries Xbox sells specifically for their controllers, and I'm not disappointed in the least bit. I was lucky enough to find two sets at Tuesday Morning for $5 each. They do take quite a while to charge (about 24 hours), but this first charge has held it's own for over a week now at several hours of gameplay per day. My review is five stars, I'll buy these again when my first two sets die.

The only con I've noticed so far is the charger does not automatically shut off when the batteries are fully charged. If you overcharge these you can ruin them. I recommend setting an alarm/reminder when it's time to unplug them.

I tried on different USB ports, and it's not working, waste of money!
