4.0 out of 5 stars Golden fun, May 7, 2008
This review is from: Polaroid i733R 7MP 3x Optical 4x Digital Zoom Camera (Gold) (Electronics)
First off: this little Polaroid digital camera exceeded my expectations, which admittedly were low to middling based on reviews for other Polaroid digital camera products. Image quality, while not in the same league as Canon, is quite good as long as the ISO setting is 100 or lower, with bright colors and an acceptable level of detail in well-lit areas. (Frankly, I've seen much worse in vastly higher-priced models from more respected names; a trawl of image samples on dpreview.com will back me up on that.) Shadows tend to go muddy and noisy even at the lower ISO settings but not overly so for viewing at small sizes. Movies aren't too shabby from this, either. Lots of settings and even some manual controls make for fun and creative use. . Another plus is the that the camera comes with an iPod-like silicone skin, which adds a level of scratch protection and a little shock absorption.

On the downsides, the camera does tend to go through AA batteries very quickly so rechargeables - and lots of them - are the way to go. While the flash works well, I had one shooting situation where the camera dragged the shutter, so that while the flash still fired, the images were streaked because exposures were longer than expected. It was a neat effect but not what I had wanted. Only happened once, though, but something I keep in mind when I'm using the camera inside with flash now. Also, there's no optical viewfinder; the large LCD is fairly bright and useable in nearly all situations but does tend to wash out in strong sunlight

All in all, this small Polaroid is fun for the casual shooter or even kids getting their start in digital photography. Its compact size - like a bar of Dial soap - is easy to pocket and hold, and the feature set plus intuitive menus make for enjoyable photography.
