The solution? Just wait! I put the new batteries in, noticed the flashing, and started searching online to see if this was a problem. After about 5 minutes, the screen stopped flashing, and all was normal! This might be a calibration, or some other new battery diagnostic. Just wait a few minutes and it should start working correctly!
This scale flipped out on me once, and was flashing all sorts of weird numbers. I wasn't sure what was going on.
That was only one time, however, and since then, it's been performing beautifully. I've started selling on ebay again, and am thrilled that I can use this to weigh very light items. It's extremely accurate, and enables me to buy postage online. So despite that one occasion, I'm really happy w/the scale and I'll keep my 5-star rating -- especially for having paid $19. Will update if things change.
I bought this a few days ago from Costco ($19) and have been loving using it every chance I get! My only experience with kitchen scales is that they're bulky, sometimes have different parts you have to put together, stick out in odd places, and are shaped in such a way that they're awkward to store.
Not this one! it's slim, smooth, is 1 piece, and is super easy to turn on and use. You can quickly switch between ounces and grams if you need to, or use the "Tare" button if you've put a bowl (or prior ingredients) on the scale and want to start from zero again. The on/off button barely takes the light tap of a finger, and you've immediately got this bright, easy-to-read digital screen. It goes up to 11 pounds, which is higher than I've ever seen in a kitchen scale.
(Sidenote: it also occurred to me that I could use this as a postage scale if needed, and avoid waiting in long lines at the post office.)
As another reviewer said, it's really convenient to store; I'd say it's like a hardcover book. For me it makes a *huge* difference working with a basic square that's uniformly shaped/symmetrical on all sides, and nothing protruding.Read more ›
The all glass top makes it easy to clean and sanitize, the touch buttons are precisely calibrated to work with minor effort, and the tare button makes it easy to add several ingredients without emptying the container. Easy to store in the kitchen drawer where it is easily accessible for everyday use.
Polder has been around since 1976 and have been making innovative scales for several years. They seem to specialize in practical, yet beautifully designed kitchen accessories. If this scale is reliable I'll become a fan of the brand. So far so good.
I went to Polder.com and emailed them asking for a RMA because the scale died after 3 months. Chris Scott of Polder wrote back to me and said they are shipping me a replacement scale. I received the scale today and it works fine.
Luckily, I googled the problem and found the other Amazon reviews. I put the batteries in again for one last go and waited, 5 mins past and the flashing continued, 10 mins passed and so on. Before giving up completely, I gave it a few hits and without any change I left it to the side, thinking it wasn't going to work.
When I looked to the side a few minutes later, I saw that the flashing had stopped and the scale was working perfectly again.
I'm so happy- while I did have to wait approx. 30 mins, at least it finally works again and I don't have to buy a new one.
If this happens to you, don't give up- it will work eventually!
One caution with any load cell electronic scale (like the Polder) is NOT to put heavy weights on the scale in excess of its capacity or you will destroy the mechanism. The scale will fail. Some of the one star reviews are no doubt due to mishandling the scale and trying to weight items that are too heavy for it!
It is worth noting that this scale is for everyday light kitchen duty and is not for commercial or industrial purposes.
