It serves a function...,

This review is from: Polder KTH-916201 Retro Bread Box/Bin, White (Kitchen)
The Polder retro bread bin is essentially a replica of the Wesco Grandy bin used throughout Europe for decades. Wesco Grandy bins cost well over $100 (if you were buying on Amazon, $120 with shipping), they are very heavy, and akin to the better bread bins used stateside 50+ years ago. In Europe, most homes have fresh bread... even the commercial breads (think Wonder bread, but different) only last about a week, so bread may mold even though it is still very moist... these boxes are dispensable. Further, most homes have open packages of biscuits (cookies) that are served at tea time. They go in the bin also. Of course, most people stateside do not keep the large assortment of breads and baked goods typically found in a European household so $100 is a bit high for what is basically an enameled tin box.
The Polder box does the job... and has the look... but it is much lighter. In fact, it reminds me of my husband's tool box or a tin treasure chest bank I had when I was very young... in other words, it is light. It's kind of a bummer... I honestly didn't think it would be as light as it is... and I like the feel of heavy things... especially in the kitchen. However, that is not to say the Polder bin won't do it's job... no... it is made the same as the Wesco... secure lid with holes in the back. And the Polder bin is large... I like the size. It probably wouldn't fit two loaves of commercial bread in it, but I don't use commercial bread. You can easily fit in several loaves of bakery bread or homemade bread (which I use mine for). So.. the verdict? I am weighting mine down with two wooden trivets in the bottom and a tea towel... it will do the job... maybe I will invest in a Wesco down the road... if I can get it at good price.. until then... it was $40 well spent. You could do worse than this one and if you decide to upgrade down the road (it's not as if there are better ones on the market now- as of May 2011) you can always use your Polder to store office supplies, bath products, etc. Be aware though... a bread bin protects your bread about the same way a covered cake stand does... you can buy a glass covered cake stand for less than the bread bin and it serves more uses... most double as punch bowls, dip trays, and cake stands... so if you only need to store a small amount of bread, buy a cake stand. You'll still get the retro look for about half the price... (PS ... if you decide to buy a cake stand... go with the glass Anchor Hocking ones... they are invariably heavy and inexpensive. Other companies can vary greatly.)

I ordered this bread bin because I bake my own bread and because I thought it would be like the one my uncle has in Europe/Suisse. I was truly very disappointed. It's so light weight that when you open it, it slides across the counter. I'm thinking--how is it going to keep my bread fresh? It looks like my uncle's--his is white. But other than the color, there is no comparison. I 'll figure out something to do with it. But not to keep bread or bakery goods in it. It is not worth 40 dollars that's for sure!

The breadbox is nice and heavy and it reminds me of the one that was in our kitchen when I was a child. The lid closes snugly. It can hold what ever you want it to. I personally keep my loaf of bread and a bag of bagels in it and there is a little more room. I do not regret this buy at all.
