Numbing cold, deep snow, massive icebergs, slowly moving glaciers; vast, windswept treeless spaces; pesky mosquitos; polar bears and seals; penguins and killer whales: thes and other impressions of polar regions are, indeed, applicable to at least parts of the Earth's poles. The North and South Poles share many environmental and climatic features. They also share a fascinating beauty that is reflected in the images in Pole to Pole: The Arctic and Antarctic. The quality of the diffuse, low-angled polar sun and the remarkably clear air in these dry regions of little air pollution contribute positively to striking visual effects.
