Product Description

POLE POSITION consists of two races: the Qualifying Lap and the Grand Prix. In both races you're racing against time and other cars. The longer you race and the more cars you pass, the more points you score. You earn 10,000 points for completing a lap and 50 bonus points for each car you pass. A lap is one complete circuit of the race course (see diagram). The Qualifying Lap is 90 seconds long, but you must complete it in 73 seconds (L/73"00) or less to qualify for a position in the Grand Prix. If you don't qualify, you can continue racing until the Race Timer counts down to zero. Then your car stops, a bonus for the number of cars passed is added to your score, and the game ends. If you qualify, your car is positioned for the Grand Prix and a bonus for qualifying is added to the 10,000 points you scored for completing the lap. The faster your lap time, the better your position and the bigger your qualifying bonus (see SCORING). Go for POLE POSITION, the number one starting spot. It's worth 4000 bonus points. In the Grand Prix, your object is to finish the race in the shortest possible time. At the end of the last lap, a time bonus for each second left on the Race Timer is added to your score, in addition to a bonus for the number of cars passed. The race is four laps long. Complete each lap before the Race Timer runs out to earn "extended play" time and go on racing. If the timer runs out before you finish a lap, your car stops, your passing bonus is added to your score, and the game ends.

4.0 out of 5 stars A decent Atari 2600 arcade port!, September 28, 2005
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Pole Position (Atari 2600) (Video Game)
Pole Position for the Atari 2600 is a decent arcade port! Graphics are decent for the Atari 2600. Sound effects and music are barely adequate. Controls take some getting used to but are pretty easy (in this version you are constantly moving...only controls are left to steer left, right to steer right, up to shift to high gear, down to shift to low gear, and the red fire button acts as your brakes). Gameplay is the same as the arcade classic. You get one track (Mt. Fuji), and the scoring table is the same as the arcade version. For the Atari 2600, Pole Position is a decent arcade port!

2.0 out of 5 stars POLE POSITION GOOD ARCADE BAD PORT, September 21, 2010
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Pole Position (Atari 2600) (Video Game)
I was not very amused by pole position on the Atari VCS(2600). I spent a while in a pizza place that had the arcade machine POLE POSITION that I really, really enjoyed. I thought Pole Position on the ATARI would be just like it, but I was wrong. I was feeling bad to...I really wanted to hear the intro song...hear my engine rev...the sound of the lights changing...and the explosions when I veered off road...but I didn't feel I got any of that with this game(POLO POSITION II for the Atari 7800 has all of this but is not an exact port of the arcade).

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite games on the atari., July 1, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Pole Position (Atari 2600) (Video Game)
This is one of my favorite games on the atari. It is similar to Enduro but it is more realistic. The graphics r really good for the atari and the track is like real. The car is just the same as the others but it is a different color. The object is to try to pass everyone and not hit them or crash and try to get in first. It has many twists and turns while u try to avoid hitting oil sliks, water, going off of the track, and hitting ur opponents. This is one of my favorite atari games.
