Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Decidedly less flat-footed than most introductions to the police, this picture book uses a bit of story to show what officers do and amiable artwork to make them seem more approachable. Four people arrive at the police station one morning, change into their uniforms, and get to work. When a broken traffic light is reported, Sergeant Santole dispatches Officer Mike. A lost child who uses a police call box is rescued by Officer Jan, while Officer Carl apprehends two robbers fleeing—on foot! The cheerful, rhyming text concludes: “Situation? Under control! / ‘When people need help, we rock and roll!’” Alley’s colorful illustrations will engage children with intriguing details of life in this bustling town. The use of animated facial expressions and body language even for peripheral characters contributes to the sense that this town is full of stories—stories with happy endings for almost everyone. A nice read-aloud pick for community-helper units. Preschool-Grade 1. --Carolyn Phelan

More About the Author

I was born in a trailer in High Rolls, New Mexico, in 1958.

By my sixth birthday, I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wanted to be a writer. I was fascinated by the sound of words, the sweep of story. I wanted to make word magic and tuck it inside the covers of a book.

A writer needs a very tough skin. And she needs something to write about.

Fortunately, my parents were quite eccentric. My childhood can only be described as 'exciting.'

I tracked caribou and arctic wolves across my family's homestead in Alaska, caught tiny tree frogs in the swamps and rain forests of the Pacific Northwest, and chased dust devils and rattlesnakes across the high desert of New Mexico.

Against all odds, I survived my many misadventures. I was not electrocuted or drowned. Most of the bullets missed, and the incidents with bears, snakes, wolves, and angry moose were not fatal.

Before I settled down to have children I worked as a ranch hand, a wood cutter, a lumberjack, a census taker, a wrangler for wilderness guides, and an archeological surveyor.

I am the author of several picture books and many middle grade novels. Tyger Tyger, book one of the Goblin Wars series, is my first novel for young adults.

Mike, Carl, and Jan have what it takes to serve their town as police officers: the desire to help people, the skills to resolve difficult and sometimes dangerous situations, and the right equipment. Join these dedicated public servants as they respond to a traffic jam, lost child, and a crime scene. Will they get everything under control? This pleasant book makes a great resource for introducing the youngest readers to simple ideas in economics related to jobs and public service.

I bought this book for my kids in school, to introduce what a police officer does. They were so excited and thrilled once I finished reading the book. It is very easy to understand and I think it is for all ages because I enjoyed it myself. I highly recommend this book for teachers and parents because your kids are going to love it.

Rhyming text that occasionally invokes Seuss introduces the reader to a squad of trusty and friendly police officers ready to save the day, no matter how the day needs to be saved. The text is spare and has great pacing, and the engaging illustrations contain loads of great surprises and mini-stories to keep readers coming back. A warm, informative, and entertaining introduction to the local policeman and an indispensable career field!

Kersten Hamilton is fabulous at writing very short, action-packed, fun-filled books for preschool children. This is another winner, especially for boys who will love getting a look at what police officers do. The officers (including a woman) are competent, energetic and friendly. The bright, fairly simple illustrations back up the story well.

We got this gem out from the library and my 3.5 yo loved it with the rhyming words and I loved the illustrations. It starts out showing each police officer arriving as a 'normal' person changing into uniform and then each helps in a different community service way from helping turtles cross the street to catching bank robbers.

POLICE OFFICERS ON PATROL by Kersten Hamilton, illustrated by R. W. Alley, a fun gentle book to introduce children to their community helpers -- police officers. With fun rhyming language and cute scenes, this book reveals these charming ready-to-go officers. A nice introduction to the "good guys". Worthy.

Kersten Hamilton has produced yet another energetic, fun book for small children. The friendly, colorful illustrations complement the rhyming text. Love when the lost child self-helps by using a police call box. This book is reassuring for children while utilizing a nice cadence for reading aloud.

A very fun read for kids who love police officers. Also a perfect classroom or homeschooling book for teaching about community members--read it right before your field-trip to the police station.
