4.0 out of 5 stars Quick & Easy
Great basic info and helps you plan your preparation for promotion. Most of these books are very much the same, but this one covers most all of the variables they all seem to have.

I got promoted first to corporal, then sergeant within two years so it worked for me!

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
I purchased this book on recommendation from a Promotional Preparation course I recently attended. It is horrible! It isn't worth the time or money to read. It basically tells you how to cheat on written exams by looking for certain words in the questions and answers. If you honestly read the material you are supposed to and take your written exam you will do much...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Aid, August 25, 2008
This review is from: Police Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain Promotion Exams (Paperback)
This book is an excellent companion to your study material. The hints they give you are for the "buzz-words" that civil service examiners love to use in test questions. They certainly don't guarantee a correct answer, but when you're stuck, knowing those key words and/or phrases can bail you out. The practice exams in this book are more than worth the price of purchase. This book definitely helped me with my promotion exam.

First, I'd like to give the disclaimer that I've only taken promotion exams in NY. This book is good for NY police promotional exams, as it goes over a lot of reading interpretation and Iannone concepts, but if you're outside of NY, caveat emptor.

One of the authors of this book runs prep courses in NY. Going over this book (which of course he listed as suggested reading in his course :-)) and looking at his course material, I can say that the book is the Reader's Digest version of parts of his course. I'm purposefully being vague because I don't want it to seem that I'm advertising for them, but that course, along with his lectures and classes, hitting Iannone's book hard, assorted NYS law books, and then using this book as a quick question bank/refresher guide helped me greatly. Even though I recommend it (especially if your jurisdiction uses Iannone's "Supervision of Police Personnel" for exam material) don't rely just on this one book though, devour as much info as you can. It's your career, why skimp on it?

It basically tells you how to cheat on written exams by looking for certain words in the questions and answers. If you honestly read the material you are supposed to and take your written exam you will do much better than to try the tactics this book suggests.

2.0 out of 5 stars Apalling, September 7, 2007
This review is from: Police Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain Promotion Exams (Paperback)
Although I give the book two stars because some of the information in it may be helpful, the editing of the book was a dismal failure. It lowered my confidence in the book drastically to observe how many times a word was spelled incorrectly or used in the wrong context.
