5.0 out of 5 stars Informative and to the point
Brief!

- Generally, the book is brief and simple. Most of the concepts are explained in a simple manner that doesn't try to confuse you

- Some of the chapters are pretty interesting, but of course there will be some that will bore you.

- Relatively short textbook, which is good. Concepts about police and society should simple, especially...

1.0 out of 5 stars Adequate for an introductory course but not much more
While this book is an adequate general overview of the general topic "police and society," and appropriate for a high school class or a freshman-level college class, I find it is not very interesting beyond skimming the surface of what is surely a fascinating topic.

Other books (such as Vila and Morris, 1999, The Role of Police in American Society, just off the top of...

- Relatively short textbook, which is good. Concepts about police and society should simple, especially since this is an introduction textbook.

Good read and bearable for a class. Easy to skim and student-friendly.

The book was exactly what I needed, and even better that it was in great condition for an amazing price for a college student.

The book was brand spanking new, and it only cost me 30 something bucks. New at the book store on campus it's over 80 or so. Even used it would cost me 50 or so. This was better than buying used, where you have no idea what condition the book truely is in. Brand new book, for less than half the price! Priceless!!!
Thanks

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent overview of Police and Society, December 3, 2008
This review is from: Police & Society (Paperback)
This book takes a theoretical approach to policing in modern day society. I had to use this book by one of the professors who was an author of the book and I enjoyed the book and the teaching. Just because a professor or author has never been a police officer does not mean they do not understand the challenges and theories of teaching Criminal Justice students. This book is very basic and if you are looking for a great overview of Criminal Justice, this should be sufficient. I enjoyed learning from this book and I feel I learned a lot from it. If you are interested in learning about Policing concepts and theories, I would suggest using this book!

Other books (such as Vila and Morris, 1999, The Role of Police in American Society, just off the top of my head---and also the several books in the "Policing and Society" series) provide a much meatier, much more intriguing and substantial treatment of the topic.

Unless you know absolutely nothing about this topic and want to just know the general, most rudimentary basics, I'd suggest looking at other books written by seasoned law enforcement practitioners.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a very helpful portrayal of cops, society and culture, June 12, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Police & Society (Paperback)
I was in a class where this book was required by one of the authors. This was alright with me because I thought I was getting a good deal---the book and the author. I came to find out that this particular professor (author) has never been a cop! He talked about cops as if he knew the life of a cop, but he couldn't answer even simple questions about what it was really like, for 'police and society.' The book isn't very good because it's impossible to believe the word of professors who haven't 'been there' like most of us in the classroom.
