Lois Lenski's _Policeman Small_ illuminates the busy day of a traffic cop of the early twentieth century. Policeman Small directs traffic himself! He carries a sign to work which says STOP on one side, and GO on the other! Certain details of his work date the book as a whole, but my toddler son still loves _Policeman Small_.

Small visits the scene of an accident, and sorts things out. Small stops traffic so kittens don't get hit by cars. Small stops a young speeding driver, and cautions him to obey the speed limit.

All the various duties of Policeman Small can keep a curious young reader mesmerized. We are invited to watch Policeman Small as he performs all the various duties of the traffic cop; when he retires at the day's end, he is tired. Exhausted parents can sympathize. This is a good book to finish a bedtime storytime.

Policeman Small is a fantastic book that we've been reading to our son since he was 6 months old, and even then he was engaged with all the colors and sounds. Now he's 17 months, and he loves all the exciting pictures of cars and trucks. It was a great learning tool, too-- we went to a parade one day, then showed him the parade in the book, and something clicked. After that, he'd jump right to that page, stand up and look at it smiling and clapping. Lois Lenski's artwork is superb, and I'd love to see more of her books kept in print, especially in this board book format. This is his favorite of the "Small/Little" series of board books. Also recommended: "The Little Train," "The Little Fire Engine" and "Cowboy Small."

My girls enjoyed this book. My husband is a 3rd generation law enforcement officer and our last name is Small. We really enjoyed the book and got all 3 of our girls a copy and my father-in-law a copy as well. We hope that everyone else enjoys it as much as our Small family did! :)

My 1.5 year old loves this book. We saw it first time at the library, borrowed it and read it everyday. Once, twice and even thrice a day!!! We ended up buying a copy from amazon because we were going on a trip and my son insisted on bringing the book with us.

i bought this book for my grandchildren as i was read it as a ittle girl and read it to my children as they grew up. i have always loved lois lensky's books and was very happy to add it to my ever growing library of childrens books.

Pure, as simple and direct as you'd expect from Lois Lenski with an added benefit, the Policeman Small song to sing along.
