Featuring analysis of healthcare issues and first-person stories, Policy & Politics in Nursing and Health Care helps you develop skills in influencing policy in today's changing health care environment. Approximately 150 expert contributors present a wide range of topics in policies and politics, providing a more complete background than can be found in any other policy textbook on the market. Discussions include the latest updates on conflict management, health economics, lobbying, the use of media, and working with communities for change. With these insights and strategies, you'll be prepared to play a leadership role in the four spheres in which nurses are politically active: the workplace, government, professional organizations, and the community.

  • Comprehensive coverage of healthcare policies and politics provides a broader understanding of nursing leadership and political activism, as well as complex business and financial issues.
  • Expert authors make up a virtual Nursing Who's Who in healthcare policy, sharing information and personal perspectives gained in the crafting of healthcare policy.
  • Taking Action essays include personal accounts of how nurses have participated in politics and what they have accomplished.
  • Winner of several American Journal of Nursing "Book of the Year" awards!
  • 18 new chapters ensure that you have knowledge of the most up-to-date information on policy and politics.
  • The latest information and perspectives are provided by nursing leaders who influenced health care reform with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have book for every nurse's library! April 1, 2011
Format:Paperback
A must have book for every nurse's library! Policy and Politics in Nursing and Health Care is the most comprehensive book of its kind. From nursing students to doctorally prepared nurses in clinical practice, education, research or administration, this book provides a wealth of information for all nurses. The U.S. health care system is changing at an unprecedented rate. It is important for nurses to be actively engaged in the political process which will determine health care delivery of the future. Policy and Politics in Nursing and Health Care will help nurses to learn about this process as well as how they can have a voice in shaping our health care system in order to provide quality, affordable and accessible health care for those in need.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best health policy book! July 14, 2013
Format:Paperback
This has been the best book for nurses on health policy since the first edition was published. It's been required reading for me and I have learned so much about how nurses can influence health care through policy and political action. The reviews that say this book is biased are so wrong - those readers must have missed the chapters about conservative nurses and what they've accomplished, the chapter that explains political philosophy, the chapter by Republican legislator Mary Behrens, and the chapter by Republican activist Elene Lopez Bowlan. This book presents many sides of important issues and is extremely balanced. It gets great feedback from students and nurses in practice that I talk to. No other health policy book that is for sale now comes close to offering what this book does. It is the best!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book July 22, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book was required for a Master's level class in Nursing Policy. It is a great book, easy to read and understand, with very short chapters. There is a lot of repetition among the chapters which helps to reinforce learning. The topics covered in the book are current and relevant to health care and nursing. Overall an interesting, educational, and even enjoyable book (as enjoyable as a text book can be).

4.0 out of 5 stars Good current reference July 18, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Soon my review will be outdated, but this book was current and I found it helpful for illuminating facts about the ACA and how it affects my practice. Helped put it into words and terms I could understand. I like how it clearly has a nursing focus.

2.0 out of 5 stars Meh.
For a textbook, this has an obvious bias toward feminism that impacts the trustworthiness of the information in several chapters. Not impressed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Politically biased
Required reading for school, but definitely not objective or unbiased. It is obviously written favoring the Democrat point of view.

Simple and to the point. Easy to read. No unnecessary information. I use it for my online degree and I can really appreciate concise chapters with main points still discussed.
