This book is by all accounts an OUTSTANDING book. It is very well written and it is very complete.

No matter what type of role you might have in social service management, this book is a must read.

In my case i read this book while designing an information system for the New Mexico Department of Human Services.

The author asserts that technology has yet to produce a good society.

To offer sustainable social service policies that are able to assist those in temporary, in a humane fashion, while respecting society's beliefs and values, requires the participation of engineers, ecologists, economists and other areas, with sociologist, anthropologist. Only the juxtaposition of all areas of science will bare fruit.

The readers should should be tempted to map some of the concepts in book, with corresponding philosophic concepts. I use the The Oxford Companion to Philosophy New Edition.

Also, the book is about Holistic Thinking, or System Thinking. The more the reader knows about this issue, the faster it will be able to understand the full meaning of the book. I recommend reading the The Fifth Discipline: The Art & Practice of The Learning Organization

To increase the understanding social service management, i recommend also that the reader uses another very good book, that it is a lot more practical, Social Policy and Social Programs: A Method for the Practical Public Policy Analyst (4th Edition)
