Recipes for favorite Polish foods,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Polish Country Kitchen Cookbook (Hardcover)
This new Polish cookbook blends recipes for favorite Polish foods with the history and culture which created them, using a seasonal arrangement to explore Polish life and how food traditions evolved. Recipes have been adapted for American kitchens but retain their authentic roots, while plenty of Polish cultural insights make for inviting leisure browsing by more than just the cook.

"The Polish Country Kitchen Cookbook" is an excellent reaouce for Polish food history, tradition, and recipes. There are many photos, drawings, and illustrated techniques. There are over 100 recipes. While this may sound like a small number of recipes, the illustrations and text detailing the food preparation and the photos and drawings showing finished dishes make this book very helpful in preparing traditional Polish dishes, as they are supposed to be prepared,
The author starts with details of the Polish country Kitchen and proceeds to traditions and food preparation for the four seasons, including the various holidays. This book is a wonderful place for Americans of some Polish heritage to get a sampling, a taste, of that heritage. Here are the traditions and foods of the Polish peasants and common laborers, who made up a large portion of the Polish immigrants to America. If you are from a different Slavic heritage than the Polish, this is still a fine book to have because of the illustrations and explanations of cooking techniques that are common to most of the Slavic cultures. Definitely, a five star cookbook.

This great cookbook not only gives you great recipes, but also some history too. I bought this cookbook and tried several of the recipes which are close to those made by my Babcia and Pra Babcia. When my parents visited once, I showed them this cookbook and within ten minutes my Father had ordered one for himself.
Now, everyone's family does things a little differently & we remember those small nuances. This cookbook will get you on the right track regardless, and all you might need to do is tweak here and there based on your family's traditions. Proud to be Polish.

This book is a excellent resource of Polish recipes and customs....it is wonderful to find a book with such detail when many of my Busia's recipes call for a "little of this" and "add a handful of that". The book was shipped in a timely manner and in excellent condition for a used book. HOWEVER, I paid $40.00 for this book and when I opened the front cover, on the sleeve the list price was $29.95. I wonder why International Books felt the need to increase the price from $29 to $40 for a USED book?....Hmmmmm....I think I'll avoid buying books from International books from now on....
