Political astrology is an exciting branch of astrology filled with great potential for practical application in the real world. By using an accurate national horoscope, the astrologer can make meaningful forecasts, much like a meteorologist makes weather forecasts. The challenge for those interested in political astrology is finding and working with an accurate national horoscope.

5.0 out of 5 stars Political Astrology: Scorpio Rising U.S. Horoscope, by Michael O'Reilly, September 17, 2007

"Political Astrology: Scorpio Rising U.S. Horoscope," by Michael O'Reilly.
223 pages, softcover, perfect bind, published by Wingspan Press, Livermore, CA, $17.95.

This is a great book on the history of the United States, as seen through then eyes of an excellent Political Astrologer, who argues convincingly for a Scorpio rising chart.

First off, the author has done his home work. He knows the history of the United States, and understands the character of its people. He begins by giving the time band in which the Declaration of Independence most likely occurred, which immediately eliminates the case supporting the popular Gemini rising. There is just no historical basis to suggest that the signers met at 2:00 - 3:00 A.M. to affix their signatures to this important document. He also explains where that idea came from, and why it used today. It was astrologically convenient to place Uranus in Gemini on the Ascendant, because after all, the U.S. is a nation that exemplifies Uranian principles of freedom and equality. Never mind that Uranus was not even discovered until 1781, well after the nation was birthed! But more importantly, he gives the documented reason why the time had to take place at the more reasonable hours of a normal work day. The signers were normal people, respecting the normal work day when getting business done. Additionally he cites the diary of John Hancock, as written in Patriot in Purple by Herbert Alan, who writes: "At last, about 2:00 o'clock in the afternoon of the fourth, the great white paper was reported out of committee (after three days of intense discussion) to the House for recommendation for approval, and was immediately ratified."

O'Reilly then rectifies the chart to 2:21 PM that day, very close in time to Marc Penfield's rectified chart, who O'Reilly generously cites credit (Penfield uses 2:20 PM - close enough!). He proceeds to show how the movement of the progressed angles to the natal planets, and transits of major bodies to these angles, supports this hypothesis. He uses a wealth of impressive historical dates to support his position. This is exactly the way a research-oriented astrologer should go about this task.

The most illuminating part of the book for me was O'Reilly's study on Presidential Astrology. Here he examined the birth charts of all 42 U.S. presidents, and reported that a whopping 10 had Mars in Leo, while 7 more had Mars in Scorpio, compared to none in Pisces. Why is this important? Well, Mars co-rules Scorpio (his preferred rising sign for the USA) and Leo is on the Midheaven (house of career) in this rectified chart. It is studies like this that can be so useful in the defense of astrology. It can also be useful in predicting future election results for USA President, which O'Reilly shows how to do with a wealth of other such studies. He even includes the four major asteroids, in one of the best interpretations of those bodies to Mundane astrology that I have yet to read.

There are a lot of excellent insights in this book about the Untied States, including the "Kennedy Curse," and the Presidential death cycle (it's not the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction as we have been taught!). He even relates astro-cartography to this chart to show which regions of the world are most important to the history and future of the United States.

This is a book that I highly recommend in an area that has not been given its due attention, in my opinion. O'Reilly is a compelling writer with an easy-to-understand style. He makes his points quickly, and then gets down to the work of showing support for those points. In the niche of Political Astrology, O'Reilly has earned his place of recognition. I will be most interested to read his views of the 2008 USA presidential race. I believe his thoughts should be listened to carefully, and for those interested, he shares those thoughts on his website at www.neptunecafe.com.

I'd have to throw my hat in the ring with Mr. Merriman. This is indeed an interesting read and compelling argument for the Scorpio Ascendant in the U.S. natal chart. Well researched and put together. Good time line work and worthy of consideration. I admit I still cling to the story (sans documentation) of Ben Franklin (an astrologer) having arranged for the first signatures at 2am. Personally, I'm inclined toward the likelihood of a 10:15am signing which would give a Gemini Midheaven and a Virgo ascendant, but that's based on less rigorous work than O'Reilly. After reading this book, I'd say the case for the Scorpio ascendant is far more likely than the Sagittarius ascendant U.S. chart used by many astrologers.

One of the challenges for astrologers is to become, as Don Juan Matus would say, "...neither for nor against" when doing what we do best. I want to commend Ray Merriman and O'Reilly as being authors who have maintained that standard. Far too many mundane (nation and world event) astrologers contaminate their research with a political world view, whether it be in their books or presentations at conferences.
