Editorial Reviews

Review

"At last, a challenging but accessible graduate-level text for a serious course in game theory for political scientists. Teaching game theory in the context of political-science examples, this book will be the standard text for many years to come." Robert Powell, Berkeley

Book Description

Political Game Theory, first published in 2007, is a self-contained introduction to game theory and its applications to political science. The methods employed have many applications in various disciplines including comparative politics, international relations and American politics. A large number of exercises are also provided to practice the skills and techniques discussed.

Ideally, a textbook should explain difficult concepts in an accessible manner. Instead, Political Game Theory: An Introduction (Analytical Methods for Social Research) gave me a migraine more often than enlightenment. The authors present much of the material in inaccessible mathematical proofs without being careful to explain their steps or logic. For many of the concepts, a simple diagram would have been much more helpful. I have encountered some of the concepts in another game theory class, yet barely recognized them the way they were explained here. This was all the more frustrating because the authors, rather than reassure the readers, frequently claim that it is "easy" to follow along. For beginner undergrad and graduate students, I'd recommend Strategy: An Introduction to Game Theory, 2nd Edition, which is more thorough in explaining concepts without dumbing the material down.

This book provides a well organized review of Game Theory as applied to Political Science. It is at an appropriate level of technicality. The one thing I would say it is lacking would be examples. Many definitions are just listed or proven and are hard to conceptualize for those unfamiliar with the field. Used in conjunction with other books, however, the value of this book increases and a concise account of the field.
