Book Description

July 3, 2009 0664233937 978-0664233938

In this exploration of John Calvin's political thought, Roland Boer treats Calvin as a biblical scholar and political philosopher, showing us elusive aspects of Calvin's Institutes. Boer investigates Calvin's careful thinking in the Institutes as well as in his biblical commentaries, pursuing Calvin's understanding of political freedom.

Boer also explores Calvin's views on grace with the eye of a careful interpreter, and suggests what we might find in Calvin's political thought if we took the Bible, grace, and freedom as seriously as Calvin did.

More About the Author

Apart from journeys by ship, train and riding my bicycle as far and as often as I can, I like to write. Mostly academic writing, on religion, politics, Bible, theology, socialism - but also on popular culture such as pornography, sex workers, film and music. I also write travel stories, with a regular column in Arena Magazine, as well as some political odds and ends.

In my spare time I try to keep my blog, Stalin's Moustache (stalinsmoustache.wordpress.com) up to date.

This review is from: Political Grace: The Revolutionary Theology of John Calvin (Paperback)
The author is part of the Jesus Seminar and has a very negative view of both Calvin and Christ. He takes Calvin out of context and distorts what he says. He seems to delight in insulting Christians and the Bible. He imagines himself in bed with one of the male revolutionaries in the book. I quote, "and I certainly would not have enjoyed being his his partner, since he would have tossed and turned in bed as God talked to him in his sleep." (p. 16) Need I say more? If you want some real scholarship on Calvin's views look at Calvin in the Public Square: Liberal Democracies, Rights and Civil Liberties by David W. Hall and Lectures on Calvinism by: Abraham Kuyper.
