Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 7-9-These series entries look at elements of government. Feinberg begins with a short history of the Constitutional Convention and then explains why there was, and continues to be, a need for an amendment process. She examines the Bill of Rights, and then groups all of the other amendments into topical chapters, an arrangement that allows students to see that each amendment was created to correct a specific defect in some area of government. The writing is clear and easy to understand. This title will serve as a good replacement for W.L. Katz's The Constitutional Amendments (Watts, 1975; o.p.). Lindop's book is not as well done; he spends most of his time detailing presidential elections, and fails to trace the rise and fall of the various parties, or discuss the issues around which they have grouped. As a result, readers will gain only a limited understanding of the parties' development or core beliefs. Ann E. Weiss's Party Politics, Party Problems (Crowell, 1980; o.p.) and George Sullivan's Choosing the Candidates (Silver Burdett, 1991) offer more detail about the history and organization of political parties and how they affect elections. The black-and-white and full-color illustrations in both books are moderately attractive, but do little to elucidate the texts. Additional purchases for libraries that need report materials.-Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO
