The early political culture of the American republic was deeply influenced by the religious consciousness of the New England preachers. Indeed, it was often through the political sermon—the "pulpit of the American Revolution"—that the political rhetoric of the period was formed, refined, and transmitted. And yet the centrality of religious concerns in the lives of eighteenth-century Americans is largely neglected. This has created a blind spot regarding the fundamental acts of the American founding.

Political sermons such as the fifty-five collected in this volume are unique to America, both in kind and in significance. This volume thus fills an important need if the American founding period is to be adequately understood.

Ellis Sandoz is Professor of Political Science and Director of the Eric Voegelin Institute at Louisiana State University.

5.0 out of 5 stars a must have for your collection, August 9, 2010
A friend delivered this to me and I started reading some of the sermons that interested me. Each sermon is a piece of a bigger puzzle, the ground work and justifications lay the framework for us to follow, This book if it was taught in our schools would change America right now. The way God works through the revolution and reference his scripture is a great revelation. Ellis Sandoz from LSU has some other books as well. Wonderful read, we sat around a fire while I read the sermons, powerful moving and oh yeah we have tyrants again. A tyrant is a leader that goes outside of the Constitution our leaders have done this since at least 1933 with the Federal reserve act and then the IRS both of which are private Corporations not government entities at all.....TYRANNY HAS RAISED ITS HEAD NOW WHAT WILL WE DO? We have a great cloud of witnesses in this book and it clearly represents how they dealt with each step of the transformation into a nation. God help us!

I am a student of history working on my thesis and have found this book to be very benifical to my work. This is due to the fact that all the important and or useful sermons are in the book and makes my job so much easier.
