The second edition of this highly successful textbook for students of politics and sociology presents an up to date coverage of the topics and issues which comprise the interests of political sociology. It offers a thorough and critical review of theory and empirical research in this field, and a very full account of political sociology and its relationship to political and social theory. This new edition puts less emphasis on behavioural aspects than the original edition, where there is more discussion of the structural and institutional issues. Most of the chapters in this volume reflect the authors own original research and teaching interests and new chapters on the development of the state and on political violence have been included in this edition. The authors do not conceal the considerable problems of research in political sociology but the book is not preoccupied with methodology, the emphasis being on a critical synthesis of the vast amount of empirical research, and on the evaluation of current theories.
