It took Prince Paul an incredible four years to release a follow-up to his critically acclaimed 1999 album, Prince Among Thieves. What’s up with that? As Paul himself would say, it’s just the Politics of the Business, baby. Featuring old friends and collaborators, elderspokesmen and newcomers, poets, comedians, and off-the-beaten-track MCs, Politics takes a 360-degree look at what it takes to survive the music-industry shell game. Wildy creative and sprawling as you’d expect, the album juxtaposes straight-up hip-hop tracks with radio voiceovers, acoustic hip-hop poetry, and a "special word from DJ Premier," whose gravel-voiced pronouncement that "hip hop is wack right now y’all" makes you want to laugh and cry all in the same breath. On the music tip, Politics is Paul’s most experimental offering, signaling his desire to make his music "go even further undergound." Prince Paul did this album after the falling out of his label. He was trying to make a horribly mediocre and bland and mainstream sounding album-don't you agree he achieved that? I'm amazed that he can pull of something so dreary and mainstream. I didn't think he had it in him. But he does it. In the liner notes, he even still feels "a good portion of people probably won't go beyond the surface of this album or care enough to even get the meaning or irony of this project." He intentionally tried to record a bland album. and he succeeded.

This is by far, the best album I have bought all year. Prince Paul has come back to claim the belt. The skits are funny, the beats are dope, and the colaborations are tight.

What more can I say? You have got to check this one out!
