Book Description

February 28, 2008
The motivating thesis of this book is that political opinions and behavior of individuals cannot be explained apart from the environments within which they occur. Individual characteristics alone do not determine political actions and opinions. Rather, political behavior must be understood in terms of the actor's relationship to the environment, and the environmental factors that impinge on individual choice.

This book is a good example of political science that matters. Why does it matter in this case? Well, because this book shows how one's residential context will influence the manner in which they decipher politics. The greater the percentage of people unlike you living down the street, the more likely you are to see politics through the window of race. This means that individuals will have certain concerns stressed based on who they see on a day to day basis. This does not mean that there are concerns between the two groups, just that you think that way because you are confronted with different individuals. Huckfeldt does a great job of explaining why these facts exist even if tension does not exist.
