Book Description

October 1, 2008 Paul in Critical Contexts
Was Paul an opponent of imperialism or a participant in the patriarchal social codes of his day? Joseph A.
Marchal moves beyond this too-simple dichotomy to examine the language of power and obedience, ethnicity, and
gender in Paul s letters, arguing that understanding the way rhetorics of power overlap and intersect requires a
nuanced combination of feminist and post-colonial criticism and a "thick description" of colonized space.
His analysis of gender and power dynamics in the Roman colony of Philippi is an exemplar of a
new approach to reading Paul in his contexts, always attentive to the contexts of the contemporary interpreter as well. The Politics of Heaven offers new clarity and precision in the interpretation of the apostle and the social spaces in which he moved.

This review is from: The Politics of Heaven: Women, Gender, and Empire in the Study of Paul (Paul in Critical Contexts) (Hardcover)
You know your in trouble when in the first couple of pages the author dons sack cloth and ashes by describing himself as an elite pale male.

I hope that this book would answer some questions I had concerning the Apostle and his interactions with the early Christians of that era. Instead what I got was a disjointed and bizzare rant about post colonial feminism, class mobility and other colonized women. Plus, for some odd reason, the author attempts to link Paul's words with U.S. class power and African women. Perhaps the books most bizzare statement is on page 83 where the author writes that: the colonial imagination can be charaterized as "porno-tropic', as it sexualized and gendered peoples and locations." No doubt Paul was thinking of dusky maidens and palm trees while walking toward Corinth.
