Book Description

The space cruiser Phoenix has just fought off Earth's first alien invaders and now it's time for the ship to spend some time in Space Dock for scheduled maintenance. Meanwhile, the crew has extended shore leave on Earth.

Major Slate (the Fifi pilot from Telepaths and Traitors) escapes from military prison and throws a wrench in everyone's plans, kidnapping Tim and using him to bait Jason and young Steve into his trap. Also covered in this smorgasbord of mini-stories are Vinny's reading lessons, Jason and Ellen's reunion and wedding, the forging of Armstrong Garrett StarDesigns, Tim and Mary's odd courtship, and Steve's 18th birthday.

It should be noted that this is not really a complete novel as much as a compendium of "deleted scenes" which happened between "Hard Time" and "Gynocracy". There is very little action in space and it is purposely left incomplete where Gynocracy will take over. Please be aware of the nature of this fan-requested "bonus material" and do not leave nasty reviews to complain about its incompleteness. You have been warned.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This is a "bonus materials" collection with episodic details of personal events that occurred between Hard Time and Gynocracy. Because there are really only a couple of subplots with conflict, I was planning to leave all this "on the cutting room floor", so to speak. Several fans convinced me it was worth publishing. I hope the cover and this note, as well as the product description, are enough to warn readers NOT to expect the same type of novel as the other books in the Phoenix series.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Lovely In-Between Story December 25, 2012
By JHarvey
Format:Paperback
Politics, Love & Live Bait is a lovely in-between story that shows the beginning of the healing process from Hard Time and the continued comradeship of the Phoenix crew. The novel also sets up for the final two books, which were my personal favorites. I must say that this book is not a standalone; however, if you loved the others in the series, this is a must-read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than the author says... December 20, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The author disparages this book, saying it isn't really one of the Phoenix Rising series, just a bunch of stuff she had eliminated from the others. The rest of the books apparently have much more conflict, trouble and action. Me? I enjoyed the "action" in Politics, Love & Live Bait. The Phoenix team - and others - traveled allover the US - from Wyoming, to Cuba to Washington DC to Oklahoma City - for several reasons while the Phoenix was in dock for repairs and updates.

While it had no torture experts from the future shredding both bodies and minds (as in previous volumes), I find myself quite willing and even happy to live with that. In this book there is physical and emotional pain and effort enough to go around, but as in the real world, if things are going to get done you have to just forget going through official channels and solve your own problems - not the least of which sometimes comes from the official channels - so what's new? There is the reality in the book, with very little blood.

No, nobody got their legs chopped off or their eardrums pierced in this book, but I found the vast personal challenges faced by almost everyone much more interesting than shredded back flesh. In fact, based on the author's recommendations, I'll simply ignore the others in the series. JimL
