Book Description

January 2000
This book is an important expose of conditions in prison and society in general. It is a shocking and fascinating look at a brutal world which most people are not unfortunate enough to experience.

Written without bitterness or bias, it is the testimony of a man who has used his time to read, study, and write about life in prison and life in the world.

About the Author

Mr. Johnson is an intelligent young African-American man, who graduated ahead of his class, in his junior year in high school. He continued on to attend community college, and to work as well, when he was falsely accused and convicted of a crime that carried with it an automatic 17-year sentence, despite his having no previous convictions. His writing is an effort to expose the injustice of the prison system, and of a judicial system which does not allow judges to pass sentence in each case on its own merits. He has written several books and screenplays during his time in federal prison.

I read and re-read the book written by M. Avery Johnson, and I must say that it is a true eye opener. M. Avery does not use "million dollar" words with 50 syllables, but he does get you thinking about what is really going on in the United States. It is sad to think that we live in a society that is causing more problems then they are solving. The prison system is set up to make people (government, and others) rich. It is not set up to correct the problems that we are facing with the drug problems. I truly don't understand the difference in the sentencing of "Crack" vs. "Cocaine" -- how can you sentence 10 to 1 when you can't have one without the other. How can a young man who has never been in any trouble be forced to serve 17 years of his life on what the Federal Government estimate what he might have sold over a period of time, because he was not willing to tell on someone else. This books needs to be in every household, but not just as a dust collector on the table -- but as a tool for people to start evaluating what is going on in the US -- stop sticking our heads in the sand and stand up and take notice to what the government is doing. The thing that has to be stopped is how the drugs are getting here -- I know M. Avery does not own a plane, boat, or train to get the drugs here -- but I can imagine the Drug Lord who does -- has not and will not serve one day in prision -- he is walking around fat and happy while you have these young men sit in jail, costing the taxpayer more than a college education. Why not invest that money in our community -- so they won't end up there. Recreation centers, Libraries, Big Brother programs...etc. Come everyone -- open your eyes -- this book will help you do that! Sorry if this is too long -- but after reading it again, my heart hurt to think that this can happen in this day and age.
