Good introduction to the political and policy problems of protecting endangered species in Canada, July 12, 2008
This review is from: Politics of the Wild: Canada and Endangered Species (Paperback)
This edited book provides a good introduction to Canada's management of endangered species ("species at risk" in Canadian). Individual chapters provide background information, history, and discussion of federal, provincial and international efforts to protect endangered species, both terrestrial and marine. Authors always have one eye on US policy, generally as a model - - the US passed the world's first endangered species act, and it arguably still has the world's strongest protection.
The only real limitation of this book is beyond the authors' control, since Canada finally passed its first Species at Risk Act only after the book was published. This Act is weaker than its US counterpart, though some provisions learn from experiences south of the border. It would be good to have a revised version of this book looking at Canadian experience since passage of this Act.
The book lacks any theoretical or analytical framework but the authors provide good, analytical chapters nonetheless. This is the place to start if you want to learn about Canadian protection of endangered species.
