This review is based on the following:
Sub used as down-firing
Sub is hardwired - (placed in a position that I did not need to purchase wireless kit)

Purchased: 2/5/11

Replaced: 8" Sony sub

Room size: 27' x 18', but listening side is about 13'.5" x 18' I know subs do not know the difference, but for location purposes I only needed to worry about getting good base in that section of the room

Summary:
Sound: 5 out of 5
Please keep in mind I went from a 2002 8" sony to a 2011 12" Polk but I can't imagine getting a better base for less. If you were going from 12" to 12" not sure how much different it would be. I have no reference. I can describe how it sounds and WOW! Great smooth and clean bass at low levels. Delivers the bass you can feel without overpowering the rest of the tracks. I have the crossover set (80 Hz). Sub has loosened pretty well over the last month and a 1/2 sounds even better than it did at first set up. I love the sound that this thing produces. I just can not say enough about how clear and warm the bass is.

When it needs to this thing can flat out rumble. Watching movies with this makes it a whole new experience. I mentioned how well it has broken in and in fact I think I am going to have to do the MAHC (auto calibration set up) again on my receiver once I hit the 6 month mark.

Features: 3 out of 5.
If you HAVE to put this in forward firing mode and in a cabinet -you might be pretty upset since the remote more than likely would be useless.

When you want to check the level of the sub you press the up or down on the volume control on the remote. You then have to count blinking lights.

I previously owned a Polk Audio PSW505 Sub, which served me well for about 3 years. Unfortunately I recently moved into a larger, carpeted apartment, and the front-firing 505 lost some of its punch in that environment. This down-firing 660 did the trick, and my home theatre packs a low-end wallop again. After listening to a variety of media over the last two months, I'm pleased. The sub produces an accurate, tight low-end thump, which sounds really nice with music but is especially great for those Hollywood blockbusters. I've currently set it at approximately one-third volume, and I get a very noticeable punch. If I crank it up, I'm pretty sure leaving it that way for long would generate a lot of noise complaints.
I'm not utilizing the wireless functionality, I've instead used the traditional wired setup using the line-level filtered input connection due to the unit's front placing and close proximity to the receiver. Contrary to the other reviewer, I found the remote very useful for making slight level tweaks without needing to bend over behind the unit. Not every sub comes with a remote, so I consider this a luxury of sorts. There are numerous settings, such as phase control, level, low pass control, all of the usual features, plus a few others I'm not using. You can also set the power mode to Auto, which will shut the sub down if it doesn't detect incoming signals within 15 minutes. I'd recommend you head over to the Polk website and check out an online user manual if you plan to use any of the more advanced configurations or features this sub offers.

I purchased this to replace an older Boston subwoofer that only went down to 38Hz with a 10" woofer. What a difference, this unit really makes that deep down thump you want for the full cinema experience. I did not go with the wireless option, so cannot review that.

The one negative thing I have found is that the included remote is a piece of junk. It barely functions, and when it does, it has to be pointed in a very specific angle at the subwoofer's infrared receiver. Luckily, my Harmony remote had the Polk remote codes available. Once I set the Harmony remote up with the Polk info, I could control all the subwoofer functions from anywhere in the room with no issues. So four stars with the one star removed because of the remote control issues.

Bought January 2013 for $399 including shipping. Great deal on a great subwoofer. Using it for both music and movies/TV in a large room (33 x 19)with hardwood floors. Using it in down firing mode, but can also be set up for front firing (optional speaker grill does not come with the unit). Set it up yesterday and listened to some loud and soft music. Very responsive and deep base. Running it with 7.1 system powered by a Yamaha RX-A1000 Aventage amp and combination of JBL and Klipsch speakers. It sounds nicely balanced with the rest of my system between 23-28 out of 40 on the volume setting.
I had to remove the battery and re-insert it into the remote two times before it started working, but works great now. Very easy to set up for volume, phase and advanced features (Polk Room Optimizer) with the remote. Replaced my 4 year old JBL 12 inch powered sub when it fried it's amplifier for no reason. Hopefully this one will last longer. Overall I'm very satisfied with this subwoofer. It has plenty of power and would recommend it.
