excellent sub for smaller home theater set up,
By
This review is from: Polk Audio DSW MicroPRO 1000 Subwoofer Speaker (Single, Black) (Electronics)
I just received my Polk Micropro 1000 and I'm very satisfied with the product. It's small size compliments (my wife's!) our living/theater room area and fills out the space with great sounding, deep bass. I have it paired with Polk RTi10's (tower) and the CSi5 center channel. I like to hear my music and movies a bit loud and I blew my last sub, another 8" sub, about 2 weeks ago (watching "Cloverfield"). After lots of reviewing and searching I came across the Micropro 1000 and just knew it was going to be powerful enough to handle the amount of power I will be pushing through this little sub based on all the specs I've read. The volume maxes out at '40'. I wanted to push it a little so I set it there and experienced no distortion whatsoever. I lowered it to '35' and set the receiver accordingly and I'm in music and movie heaven. 2400 continuos watt handling is no joke. You could spend a little less for a bigger sub, but it will not be as aesthetically, or musically adept as this little powerhouse. I'll stand by this sub and put it against any sub in the same price-range. Yes, even with a bigger woofer. Another point I want to make: I don't think it's worth it to spend another $500 for the Micropro 2000 just to get a microphone, auto-tuning and gloss finish. Let your ears do the tuning! You'll wind up changing the auto-tune setting anyway! Trust me, you will. It's the same speaker! I totally recommend this speaker. Feel free to respond if you wish.

I should state right off, that most audiophiles will probably agree with me that dedicated sub manufacturers like SVS and Hsu probably do a better job at producing really high-end sub-woofers than Polk, but holy cow, this really is a gem, particularly at this price and at this size. I can't believe the quality and volume this little cube that isn't much bigger than a 12 pack is able to produce. I have it placed in a fairly large room (20x25) and it can really fill the space, almost as well as the top of the line SVS (which is the size of a small fridge and not exactly pleasing to look at.)
Though the cone itself is only 8" (albeit driven by a 1200W on-board amp), it really hits the good low rumbles below 40Hz. The smaller speaker size also allows the sound to be more punchy and responsive, not the boomy, muddy sound of some other subs. Whether or not you prefer that type of sound from your subwoofer is subjective, but personally, I like my explosions to, well, explode, not come a rumbling in on a freight train. So for me, this little unit really is perfect.

This Polk Micropro 1000 is an upgrade that replaces my Onkyo subwoofer (Onkyo HTS790 HTIB). This Micropro 1000 is such a small sub, yet very powerful. It gives a very clean deep bass to the sound system for both music and movie. No, this sub does not output annoying "booming" sound like those cheap subs. My front speakers (Front:Polk Monitor 50's, Center: Polk Monitor CS2) don't have a good bass, but this Micropro 1000 enhances the bass powerfully in a way that you can't really tell if a sub is being used. Although small, this sub shakes the floor if turned on high volume. No distortion was detected during high volume testing. It came with a convenient remote control that can adjust volume and many other functions such as Power, mute, phase, LED...
Heat dissipation is very good as described by Polk Audio. Unlike my Onkyo sub that gets warm to the touch during standby period, this sub is only warm during music or movie playing. If you are someone who have limited space in your room but want a quality sub, pay a little more and buy this sub. However, this sub is great for any size room.

An audiophile tuning dream!,

This review is from: Polk Audio DSW MicroPRO 1000 Subwoofer Speaker (Single, Black) (Electronics)
Overview - This sub is perfect for my needs--I prefer a sealed sub which has cleaner, easier to control output (vs ported subs) and ideal controls for calibration. Calibration of a sub is far more important than its specs--a sub you can never get sounding right is much less satisfying than a lesser one that you can calibrate perfectly.
Features - I was initially worried that I wouldn't be able to tune this sub as well as my Energy Veritas subs which have infinitely variable phasing control. Most subs have simple 0-180 degree phasing, and I've found some subs impossible to get sounding right in some of my irregularly shaped listening rooms. This Polk sub has four positions (0-90-180-270) and best of all--you set them from the remote. Some people have complained about needing to observe the LED on the front of the sub to calibrate it, but there is nothing easier and more effective than tuning a sub's settings from your listening position. My remote's battery was dead out of the box, but luckily I had a CR2025 lithium cell sitting around. Calibration & Performance - I'm writing this after my first day of setup. I did my initial break in using the Tara Labs Cascade Noise CD for a few hours. The remote allowed for easy comparison of the Polk's EQ modes and produced more natural (flatter) bass response with my preferred corner placement. I also tried mid wall placement with its corresponding EQ setting, but I liked the corner configuration better. Being able to tune the phasing from the remote got the sub's phasing sync'd with my mains perfectly, for tighter bass than I have ever achieved with the Energy, and with ideal extension as well. Anyone with mains that have decent bass extension will fall in love with these subwoofers, as calibrating subs and full range mains is a phasing nightmare. I already have the Polk sounding better than my Energy ESW-V8 (flagship 8" model, front firing / rear ported, 200/800w BASH amp) in a couple of hours of tuning, simply because of the ease of calibration. The Energy technically goes a bit lower (26hz rolloff), but the Polk is cleaner and more musical (probably a combination of the sealed cfg and the ease of calibration) and I didn't really notice much difference in the bass extension. The build quality of the Energy is better (similar to the 2000-4000 models) but the Polk is still very impressive, as I have come to expect with their products. I didn't compare the dynamic limits of the two subs, but I use subs more for music at low to moderate levels than for home theater / rattling my house apart. I would expect the Polk to win at low frequency power handling due to its more powerful amp, sealed architecture, and increased surface area due to its passive radiator. Side Notes - I unfortunately missed the sale here on Amazon, purchasing instead from Newegg. Receiving the sub was as scary as Newegg's "no refund or exchange once you sign for it" policy suggested, as UPS did its usual shoddy job--the package was beaten to a pulp including a large hole ripped through the side near the woofer's cone. The shipping center I had it delivered to signed for it in this condition, despite my emails warning them of this policy. Amazingly, the sub had no damage and works perfectly. UPS has damaged high end speakers I purchased in the past and they are notorious for gouging for brokerage fees for anything shipped out of the US. On the other hand, my packages from Amazon arrived in perfect condition!

I'll be brief and to the point. Just bought a Harman Kardon AVR 3550HD 7x75-Watt 1080p from Amazon. Amazing. I was at a loss as to what to get as far as a sub. Did some research and decided on this little jewel. Folks its plug and play, clean and crisp. Very minor adjustments thru the remote and you have magic in a box. Sounds fantastic and here is the kicker. Hide it!!! Your friends will be dazzled and so will you. There are more expensive subs, but why pay more? This sub rocks....literally! By the way I paid $370 plus 25 for shipping from WholesaleAV which is an Amazon retailer and they got it to me in 4 days!

This thing really fills out the bottom end. sounds very fluid with the matching speakers (i have the rti a1) and has the ability to really "bump" but it does sound very different than ported subs. very very different sound. I think it sounds a little more like it is part of the music. even rap sounds more real, rather than like you have a subwoofer in the room. some people like that sound, though. I am very happy with this sub.
side note: seems extra dependent on location. worth buying a right-angle connector if placing in a corner. and play with it. sometimes if i didn't place it quite right it would sound like it was sending beams of sound along both the walls and diagonally across the room, but there were pockets where there was no bass. very good sub though. barely moves but makes a ton of bass. turn it up, and watch the excursion go. the driver can move a LOT if it wants to. goes LOW.

Little Sub..Lots of GUTs!!,

This review is from: Polk Audio DSW MicroPRO 1000 Subwoofer Speaker (Single, Black) (Electronics)
I bought this Sub because of limited space in the back of my system. I was worried I'd be sending it back right away after it arrived. When I opened the package I CHUCKLED a bit. It seemed smaller than I thought. But, it fit perfect behind my electronics and TV. I went through the trouble of setting it up, hoping for the best. Well, this 'LITTLE MONSTER' blew me away before I even got a chance to tweek it! I don't know how POLK did it, but I was SOLD! And even the REMOTE is a wonderful PLUS. I never imagined you could easily set up a Sub from your seat, which is where you should do it. Getting up and down is a BUMMER. It really makes the settings easy to accomplish. If you go by the LOOKs alone, don't let it fool you. Just close your eyes and be amazed. I know the EYES can deceive the EARS. Just listen to how TIGHT it is. No BOOMING, or long WOOOOING, just BASS when there should be. So, hide this LITTLE GODZILLA, where it can't be seen, and you'll forget about it's size. When it catches my eye now and then I still have to laugh a little, because I just can't believe all that BASS is coming from that Sub. If you wish order it, shop around. The prices vary, and change quickly. You should find this little jewel for under 400.00, if you're fortunate. Not the 900.00 retail.

Used in my home theater system - sound is excellent and just what I was expecting. Size was a concern because I installed it in a small cabinet. It fit perfectly and the sound exceeded my expectation for the size of the unit. I probably should have upgraded one step for some of the additional features but I could not justify the additional cost although now I would reconsider spending more for the extra felxibility.

Polk Audio DSW MicroPRO 1000 Subwoofer Speaker (Single, Black)This small subwoofer is an incredible little bundle of joy! The PSW110 sub that I had was ok but did not have the punch or crisp bass that this little beauty has. I have a medium/small living room with hardwood floors and this small sub really brings music and movies to life! It is amazing the amount of good strong bass this little eight inch sub can fill a room with. The remote control for making necessary sound adjustments is perfect. Really love this sub!

After deciding on a super nice Mitsubishi Diamond Series LT-52246 52" LCD television mounted on the wall using the Peerless ST650 Universal Tilt Wall Mount and complete Audio System consisting of the Klipsch Quintet SL speaker system, Denon AVR-988 7.1-Channel/5.1+2-Channel Multi-source/Multi-zone Home Theater Receiver, Panasonic DMP-BD55K Blu-ray Disc Player and topped it all off with a Polk Audio DSW MicroPRO 1000 Subwoofer, connected through a Tripp Lite HT1210ISOCTR Home Theater IsPRar Power Center, all sitting on the new Sanus VF5023 Three-shelf component wall-mount. Everything was purchased through Amazon.com, including the required HDMI cables and the Sub-Woofer cable and I received everything within a couple days of one another all within a 7 day period. Great job as usual Amazon!
Tucking my entire system away in a nice neat setup where no wires are showing, I wanted a Sub-Woofer that did not look like a piece of furniture, yet still provided awesome bass, great functionality and adjustability to fit my room acoustics. After doing a lot of research, I was clearly led to the Polk Audio DSW microPro 1000. I purchased it with a fantastic deal online and then received it in just three days. While setting up my TV and Audio system, I followed the clearly written instructions that were included with the Pro 1000 and had it set up and running in just a few minutes. I first tried it playing a copy CD's, cranking it up to test the bass and made some adjustments to my personal liking. Then I put in a Blu-Ray disk and tried the Pro 1000 while watching a movie with a lot of action. I have to say, the bass was so clear and not over powering at all, yet when scenes in the movie required it, my windows vibrated intensely. I rate the DSW microPro 1000 a 5 stars because it fits everything I wanted in a SW. Its compact size, its clean attractive appearance and its incredible clear bass that is capable of rocking the house when the volume goes up, yet provides clean crisp lows even at lower volumes where you can have a conversation if wanted. There was one drawback, and that was the fact the remote control failed to function even when I followed the FAQ & Trouble Shooting Guide pertaining to the remote control. But on a positive side, once I contacted Polk Audio, I am told that a brand new remote is already on its way to me completely free of charge via FedEx. I am the first to realize that any product can suffer the rare occurrence of a piece not working now and then; the important issue is how the company stands behind their product to remedy the situation. When I contacted Polk Audio via telephone, their customer service was first-rate. Summary: The difference between the Pro 1000 and the 2000 are a couple whistles & bells and the high-gloss finish. But considering the money saved, the Pro 1000 is an awesome unit that fills every requirement I could ever need or want. Again, by simply reading the manual, adjusting the volume and/or setting is as simple as paying attention. I am pushing my system with a Denon AVR-988 that totally blows you away and the bass the Pro 1000 puts out is the icing on the cake. Even with the ever so slight inconvenience with the remote not functioning, I still rate the Pro 1000 5-Stars for being an overall excellent product and Polk Audio's superb customer service! I never knew a home sound system could sound so perfect!! |
