3.0 out of 5 stars One major problem ruined an otherwise phenomenal product., May 26, 2007
This is an incredible sounding radio. It's highs are crystal clear, and it has very surprising bass even at high volumes. It's pretty easy to use and also looks very nice. There are 2 problems with this product, however. One is minor and can be lived with, but the other is a major flaw (in my opinion) that caused me to return the system.

The minor problem is that the dimmer doesn't dim automatically when the room gets dark. This is a simple feature that competing products have. It's needed because if you use this as a bedroom radio/alarm clock, you have to set the dimmer to low every night because the display is too bright otherwise (if you leave it on low during the day, you can't see the display, so you have to set the display to high every morning). This gets annoying after a while, but can be lived with if it was the only problem.

The major problem that I found is that the sound of the CD spinning was VERY LOUD! This was so annoying, especially if you like to use the sleep feature going to bed. The CD spin sound can be heard even at moderate levels. You either have to listen to your music very loud to drown out the CD spin noise, or you have to not be fazed by it. I tried to adjust to the sound by moving the unit further away from my bed, but the noise was still intolerable.

I really wanted to keep this product because of all the features packed into it and its incredible sound, but I had to return it because of the loud CD spin noise. Now I'm looking for a replacement unit (maybe the Boston Acoustic or Cambridge Soundworks CD 745).

4.0 out of 5 stars Incredible sound but very poor display, August 2, 2007
The Polk I-Sonic is really an amazing product.

For the money it produces some extremely satisfying sound.

Very deep clean bass that can be tuned to make it tighter.

Smooth lush highs and some formidable dynamics.

Essentially being an audiophile myself I can say that as a small room stand alone unit the I-sonic does it all.

It is also a very attractive unit and looks great on my 24" high dedicated Target Audio stand.

But sadly there is a big flaw in this system that prevents it from getting the full 5 stars. I would have given it 3 stars but the sound is really that good.

The flaw is that the I-Sonic has a very, very poor display and control interface.

I have 20/15 corrected vision, but from 6 feet away I can not even see the tracks or remaining time on a CD!

Also if I want to access the radio presets you don't press a preset button like you would in a car, no you have to access a tree menu and go through several submenus to find the radio station you saved.

Duh, it's so slow that it is almost faster to just tune the station by hand!

This is the way it is for all the settings. They are lost in a maze of dim, low contrast LCD numbers.

A person should not have to enter a menu that can not be seen from 6 feet away in order to flip the display between time and radio station or to choose any other features.

The credit card sized remote is small and it is very hard to press the flat stiff buttons.

Basically the display and controls are very, very poor but the sound is great.

The unit also gets very hot even when it is turned off.

Also when the unit is playing at very low volume you can hear the CD or DVD clicking as it spins.

Technically this is a 3 star review but because the sound is that good I feel compelled to bump it up to 4 stars.

But the user interface, LCD display and dumb remote all make what should be a perfect product a very frustrating exercise in high end sound.

If you are just going to sit there and only listen to one station all the time and put in the occasional CD and listen to it straight through then this is the unit for you.

But if you are a radio or CD channel surfer then forget it, you will be cut off from this activity unless you put down the silly remote and put your mug right up to the low contrast display and manually press the buttons.

But this really defeats the purpose doesn't it?

Oh and one other thing, the manual is terrible!

You can figure things out from it but they really make you work!

I recommend it but Polk needs to revamp the control interface and display.

No LCD! Use LED's like every other CD and DVD player!

3.0 out of 5 stars I have the Polk I-Sonic &Tivoli radios right in front of me!, July 5, 2007
By
L. Epstein "beenthere" (Glen Cove, NY United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Yesterday I wrote a review, and a positive one, about the Tivoli Digital AM/FM/CD Hi-Fi HiFi Music System. My husband and I are a bit obsessive, and today the Polk I-sonic arrived via UPS. We now have $1,200 from both systems on our Amazon card, but one radio is being sent back! Guess which?

It's been a long day, about 30 CDs are on our counter, all out of their cases. Everything from Opera to Jazz. Six hours were spent playing one on the Tivoli and then on the Polk. We placed our chairs 20 feet away, and we then sat 5 feet away to listen. We played the systems low, and then shook the rafters.

Living in surburbia (Long Island) FM and AM reception is poor, even in our car. In that light, we hooked both antenna up to the Polk and to the Tivoli. There was a difference in the signals both systems could pick up, and a significant one.

Except for standing on our heads to listen, we put both through a greuling process of playing indoors, outdoors, upstairs, downstairs and in the kitchen where the applianaces were running.

Both of us can now sleep tonight satisfied that the one we are returning tomorrow paled in comparison to the other.

The Polk I-Sonic is being returned. As far as performance is concerned (AM, FM and Stereo), it couldn't compete with our Tivoli system. As a matter of fact, the $6,000 Marantz system my husband splurged on can't compete with the Digital AM/FM/CD Hi-Fi HiFi Music System (Tivoli).

Aesthetically, we'd rather look at the Tivoli for the next 10 years than the Polk. It has beautiful wood encasement and looks rich and impressive. The body of the Polk didn't look as good as the Bose we sold recently on eBay - and that's a discussion for another day...

Tomorrow I'll tackle the open boxes, paper, antenna and instruction books and ship the looser back. This was our experience and if you benefit from it, I'd be so happy.

P.S. My husband considers himself an "aidophile" and enjoyed the six hours of comparing the strengths and weaknesses of the two systems. He'd have done it all night if I didn't say it was time to stop.

Tivoli is the way to go.
