Product Description

From the Manufacturer

There's no doubt that bookshelf loudspeakers offer greater placement flexibility than floorstanding loudspeakers but usually with a trade-off in performance. Not so with the LSiM703 bookshelf loudspeakers. With the performance of the groundbreaking LSiM series in a smaller, flexible bookshelf speaker format, the LSiM703 gives you the best of all worlds.

key features

  • Polk's exclusive dynamic sonic engine design optimizes the midrange driver and the ring radiator tweeter in separate interior chambers for improved transient response, superior imaging and greater horizontal off-axis response.
  • Our innovative overhung voice coil design augments the excursion length for subwoofers, increasing their power-handling capabilities and enhancing bass response.
  • Extended linear motion voice coil design allows lots of movement in a limited space, reducing impedance and extending mid- and high-frequency response.
  • Lightweight, rigid cast aluminum baskets are designed for precision motor alignment with unobstructed linear movement and ample venting.
  • Polk's proprietary, patented Dynamic Balance® technology designs out distortion-causing driver and system resonances, so you only hear the good sounds.
  • Super cell aerated polypropylene cone is the ideal balance of lightweight stiffness (for more efficient action with less distortion-causing flex) and superior damping properties.

technology

Dynamic Sonic Engine
This is a molded enclosure within the cabinet that houses the super-accurate ring radiator tweeter and the extended motion midrange driver in their own separate, tuned compartments. This aligned, optimized array contributes to wide, uniform dispersion in the critical 200Hz - 2kHz range. The dynamic sonic engine, in turn, lives in a separate, rigidly braced enclosure-within-the-enclosure. This separation and specialized tuning measurably reduces performance-robbing back wave reflections. The result is astonishing detail and realistic imaging, with improved transient response, exact timbre-matching, and greater horizontal off-axis response.

Enhanced Ring Radiator Tweeter
Our engineers took the ring radiator tweeter, usually seen in only the most exotic speakers, and found way to improve it. They reshaped the tweeter's bullet-shaped phase plug to eliminate horn-loading and improve dispersion. Redesigning the tweeter faceplate and the diaphragm added efficiency. Finally, they gave their new ring radiator tweeter its own tuned enclosure within the dynamic sonic engine. This enhanced ring radiator boasts higher power handling, extended dynamic range, better dispersion and extended top-end response

Klippel Optimized Dynamic Balance® Transducers
All transducers are developed using our proprietary Dynamic Balance technology to reduce or eliminate unwanted material and interface resonance that color the sound. Klippel measurement systems are employed during development to ensure the speaker will deliver life-like highly detailed playback at both low and high volumes levels.

Super Cell Aerated Polypropylene Cone Material
The perfect cone material is lightweight (for faster, more efficient action) and stiff (for less distortion-causing flex), with enough internal damping to suppress and offset any limitations of its lightweight stiffness and our super cell aerated polypropylene cone material is about as perfect as it gets. It's the ideal balance of lightweight stiffness with high damping, along with good resistance to moisture, UV and temperature extremes. Our drivers are fast, linear and nearly resonance free.

I have these matched with a 704 center channel and tl350s for surrounds.

These guys sound incredible, look incredible, are incredible.

Once you get past how heavy they are you notice the elegant, polished, wooden shell (an inch thick I believe, knock on them) that oozes quality. As noted earlier, the weight on these guys will require a sturdy stand. With a big of BluTack (stuff is amazing) the speakers will not being falling over. The sheer weight keeps it anchored. The weight will narrow your stand selection down slightly. Note: I think 24 inch speaker stands are about the perfect size, you want the tweeter to be ear height and after a fair 30-60 minutes of OCD measuring I figured 24 plus the bottom of the speaker to tweeter would cover the majority of ear heights. They spread the music beautifully though so I think you could even go +/- 6 and it wouldn't make a difference.

The front comes with a screen that is connected magnetically, it is incredibly simple to put back on from taking it off. I personally like the look of what you see in the Amazon picture but my better half demands they be covered.

They are large. Among the biggest bookshelf speakers I have seen. More so with the height and depth. However they don't look clunky at all. Again, they look elegant with the top tapering off in a small arc towards the back.

The packaging comes with a little folder with things that highlight why it was ok to spend what you did to get these. Worried about not having enough power for them? They have dual binding posts if you want to bi-amp them. I originally had these set up with a 7.1 receiver that was only 105 watts per channel and trust me, thats more than enough power.

I really don't know what Mr. Phil Blanchard is hearing, or not, from the new lsim 703's, but these are great bookshelf speakers for $1,500!!! Great bass extension, great midrange, and great high's!! I power these babies with a Yamaha Rx-v457 amp at the 8ohm setting and in the 2 channel pure direct stereo mode and they sound fantastic!!! Another great addition to Polk Audio's lineup!!

There are a lot of great speakers that faithfully reproduce live sound. There are also a lot of speakers that will set you back a thousand or two. But you will be hard pressed to find a pair that will fall into both categories.
The Polk LSiM 703 is exactly that. With the exception of planar speakers there is nothing that comes close.
I've owned a pair of 10 years old predecessors of these Polks (the LSi-9s). Have been very impressed with those. But rumor had it that these new LSiM 703s will be even better. I've discounted those rumors as the usual marketing hype. Also, I was not impressed with the way the LSiM 703s looked in pictures. Too simple, I thought.
Finally, a week ago, I decided to buy them. The LSiM 703s arrived double boxed. As soon as I opened up the inner box I was greeted with a dark blue folder that contains - surprise, surprise - a CD (a manual in PDF format).
The speakers were removed from the plastic wrap and I discovered that they are wrapped in soft cloth. Very classy. If you put them side by side you will immediately notice that the new LSIM 703s are an inch or two taller. The main visual difference from their predecessors is their stunning looks. No picture will do them justice. You will not be listening to music with dimmed lights anymore. The predecessors, which I loved up till I unpacked these 703s, immediately look dated (like a Delorean).
The only complaint about their looks is this huge and annoying Polk badge on bottom. It doesnt belong there. The matching center from the LSIM line up for example doesnt have this giant mole on its face.
I biwire the LSiM 703s to my power amplifier and let them break in for a few hours.
The first impression is rather unsettling. I play B&W Very Audiophile New Recordings.
