Product Description

The name Monitor is special to Polk Audio. The original Polk Audio Monitor Series, produced in the mid-1970s, ushered in the modern loudspeaker era by setting the standard for performance and value. The original Monitor Series is the line that made Polk Audio famous with its simple, sturdy construction, clear, accurate sound, powerful bass and superior imaging all at a price that made great sound available to everyone. The newly reborn Monitor Series is classic Polk: a quality-built, affordable line of high performance loudspeakers for music and home theater. They are highly efficient, so they can be driven easily by unpretentious receivers, and they are voice matched for lifelike surround sound environments. The Monitor Series boasts a stylish look that complements today’s flat screen technology, with wood grain finishes and modern Titanium faces, and beefy stabilizer feet on the tower models. Built for speed, sound quality and value, the Monitor Series is a great introduction to high performance sound.

From the Manufacturer

The Polk Audio Monitor 60 3-way Floorstanding Speaker is a quality-built yet affordable, high-performance loudspeaker for music and home theater. The Polk Monitor 60 provides open, spacious and clear audio even when driven by modestly-powered amplifiers and receivers, and is voice matched for lifelike surround-sound environments. This monitor boasts a stylish look that complements today's flat screen technology, with a sleek black finish, beefy stabilizer feet that ensure stability on carpet or hard floors, and a slim tower design that has a footprint of less than one square foot.

The Polk Monitor 60 utilizes a one-inch silk and polymer-composite dynamic-balance dome tweeter with a powerful neodymium magnet structure that delivers a clear and detailed high frequency response for realistic reproduction of vocals and instruments, as well as three 5.25-inch bi-laminate composite dynamic-balance drivers that are lightweight and stiff with good dampening for high efficiency, excellent bass and lower distortion. This unit's non-resonant all-MDF enclosure construction with 0.75-inch-thick baffles, and front-to-back and side-to-side internal bracing ensures cleaner and more lifelike sound quality. The Monitor 60 features crossovers that use Mylar bypass capacitors for more detailed high frequencies, five-way binding-post connectors for more secure hook-up options and bi-wiring and bi-amping flexibility, and magnetic shielding for safe placement on or near TVs and video monitors without causing video distortion. This unit includes a critically-tuned flared port that minimizes port noise for good low-frequency extension with minimal distortion, resulting in natural, full-bodied and rich-bass sound. Built for speed, sound and value, the Polk Monitor 60 is a great introduction to high-performance sound.

Don't expect the 5.25" woofers to give you much bass below the 50 Hz range, but this should be expected.
Bryan
These Polks sound much better and I am satisfied with the very good sound and now feel that I have the "value" speaker I was looking for.
Frugal Shopper
They have a wonderfully open, spacious and detailed sound that results in realistic reproduction of instruments, voices and soundstage.

I purchased my Polk Audio Monitor 60s after auditioning "higher end" (read alot more expensive) floorstanding speaker offerings from KEF iQ series, Klipsch RF and F series, and similarly priced speakers from Wharfedale, the Boston Acoustics Horizon floorstanding speaker, and also Polk Audio's own Monitor 50 and Monitor 70.

To my ears, the Monitor 60s combine the best elements from all of these speakers. They have a wonderfully open, spacious and detailed sound that results in realistic reproduction of instruments, voices and soundstage. I was bothered by the brightness of the KEFs and Boston Acoustics speakers though these speakers may have had slightly better soundstaging capability. I didn't like the sound of the treble from the Klipschs (specifically their tone and their detail/resolution capabilities), though they had better bass extension and great dynamics (slam). I found the Monitor 50's sound too lightweight, and I was surprised that I didn't like the tonal balance of the Monitor 70s - they sounded too dark to my ears.

As other reviewers have noted, the bass is a little too light for home theater use (i.e. to really create floor shaking explosions) but adding a subwoofer (I already had two) removes that problem. On their own, without a subwoofer, I find the bass more than enough for critical music listening. Your mileage may vary, but I have never liked the sound of any subwoofer for music listening (it's too boomy), and the Monitor 60's tonal balance sounds just right for everything from rock, classical, jazz, latin, electro. The bass is very fast and tight and extends deep enough to reproduce nearly all instruments, except deep organ notes and some electronic bass.

So I'm very very happy with the Monitor 60s particularly at their low price!

The Polk Audio Monitor 60 (M60) loudspeaker stands narrow, but deep and tall. The middle performer of the Monitor tower speaker series, it is situated between the lesser endowed M50 and larger M70 sibling. It's physical dimensions and audio design make it well suited for home theatre and two-channel music listening. For home theater surround sound use Polk offers a wide array of matching Monitor speakers to complete the setup. For those who want the simplicity of a two speaker setup, the M60 is capable of rendering relatively low bass frequencies and offers a balanced sound.

Regardless of intended setup, there is no need for cement bricks or adjustable stands as the speaker's 37.5 inch height will put the seated listener's ear and the speaker's upper drivers on the same crucial plane. The cabinet feet are a smoothed-spike design made of hard plastic; adequate for hard surface or carpet flooring use, but leaves the speaker a bit wobbly when perched on the latter and slippy when on hard surface. Though the cabinet lacks a high quality wood finish or glossy paint, the overall build quality and appearance are very well done. Sturdy, low-resonating 3/4" MDF panels, rubber driver surrounds, and speaker wire binding posts are indicators. The front facing grills are removable, revealing the silver/black baffle and driver assembly. I wouldn't be surprised, if some prefer the appearance with grills off.

Equipment used in the following listening observations includes: Polk Audio Monitor Series CS1 Center Channel Speaker (Single, Black), Polk Audio Monitor 30 2-Way Bookshelf Speakers (Pair, Black) in surround and rear positions, and a 250 watt, 12 inch HSU Research outputting bass frequencies below 80Hz.
