Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The one of a kind F/X® Wireless Surround Speaker is a single compact system that creates a completely enveloping, realistic surround-sound performance without the rear speakers, wires and, most importantly, hassles. • State-of-the-art 2.4GHz transmitter sends the surround channels from your receiver to the F/X Wireless Surround’s onboard receiver for instant, lossless signal response.
  • Polk Audio’s patented Controlled Dispersion Array (CDA) technology delivers enveloping surround left, surround right and back surround staging for 5.1, 7.1 surround in any room environment.

Take A Look Inside This Product

  • A completely self-contained wireless surround-channel sound system.
  • Four 2-1/2" Full-Range Drivers
  • 5-1/4" Woofer
  • Compact 120 Watt Multichannel DSP Amplifier.
  • Rock Solid Triple Enclosure Multi-Braced MDF Cabinet

Patent Pending Technology

Developed especially for the F/X Wireless Surround, Controlled Dispersion Array is comprised of two tightly grouped speaker arrays, in combination with phase and amplitude tapering, that produces a radiation pattern of narrow beams. CDA permits the F/X to project sound toward reflective surfaces to produce an immersive, spacious surround field, rich with spatial cues required for proper localization of surround sound effects.
Polk Digital Logic is a sophisticated processing algorithm that enables the F/X Wireless Surround to reproduce accurate and believable surround sound irrespective of your listening position relative to the speaker. This means you can place the F/X Wireless Surround on the floor, the table or up on a shelf, and at the push of a button give your ears the cues they need to locate the surround images in space.

Why You Should Consider This Product

If you want the complete home theater audio experience but can’t run the wires to the rear, or have been turned off by all the extra speakers, not to mention the hassle of setting them up just right, this is the speaker you’ve been waiting for. The F/X Wireless Surround will add room-filling, in-the-action thrills of stunning surround sound in minutes without any of the aggravation. Movies, gaming and TV all become bigger, richer viewing experiences from this compact, unobtrusive wireless solution.

1To ensure a valid warranty, Polk loudspeakers must be purchased through an Authorized Polk Audio home or car loudspeaker Dealer (such as Amazon.com). (If you're not sure a dealer is "authorized," call Polk Audio at 1-800-377-7655, and ask us.) The warranty is not transferrable, that means it applies only to the original purchaser. If you purchase your speakers from a private individual, that product is considered "used" and has NO factory warranty, no matter what the seller implies. The warranty is VOID if the serial number of the speaker has been removed or defaced. If you have any questions about your warranty coverage, or you think you need service, call Polk Customer Service at 1-800-377-7655. We’re here to help you get the most from your new speakers!

It's designed to deliver surround sound from a single cabinet. The new F/X Wireless Surround employs our Controlled Dispersion Array and Polk Digital Logic technologies to solve the installation problems posed by conventional multi-enclosure, wired surround sound speaker systems. A 2.4 GHz transmitter that connects to your home theater receiver or surround sound processor lets you enjoy the convenience of wireless 5.1, 7.1, and 9.2 surround operation, and the simplicity of placing the F/X loudspeaker on the floor, a table or a shelf.

When it comes to ease of setting this up, there's no comparison. Simply connect four wires from your receiver up to the transmitter box. Plug the speaker into an electrical outlet and place it behind your couch. Refer to the distance table in the setup guide for the correct values to enter into your receiver's configuration. (They don't recommend using Audigy or another automatic setup.) That's it. I was able to go from 5.1 to 7.1 while simultaneously removing two thick wires that had been running under the living room's area rug. So from this perspective the product is a total win.

Unfortunately, setup only lasts until you actually watch something. From then on, you have to live with the results and I was only able to tolerate a month before I brought my side speakers back and added two small rear speakers for 7.1. The lack of audio fidelity is extremely frustrating.

Movies and TV: Either crank up the volume or be prepared for this speaker to go into standby on a regular basis. When that happens you hear a faint chirping sound, which is mildly annoying but tolerable. What's bad is that when the speaker then gets told to produce sound again it will often produce a loud popping sound that not only brings you jarringly out of what you're watching but can literally make you (and any pets in the room) jump. The speaker will also sometimes lapse into producing static for which there is usually no solution other than turning it off, unplugging the transmitter, waiting 10 seconds, then plugging them back in and resynchronizing them. Not exactly conducive to enjoying a movie! For the record, I did try moving the transmitter around and ensured that there was nothing between it and the speaker other than the couch. No dice.

The Polk F/X speaker addresses an important issue with many home theater systems. For $150 it would be the ideal product - if it worked properly. I got mine last week and was attracted by the design. Unfortunately what it offers in terms of appearance, it is utterly lacking in performance.

First of all, the setup is less than trivial. I had to repeat the setup several times until I had a setting that was somewhat tolerable without the speakers distorting heavily.

The main show stopper, however, is the fact that there is a constant popping in the speakers. I was told by Polk customer support to try to switch off all other wireless gadgets. But hey, how can I be expected not to use my internet or stream audio from my cell phone anymore. This really sucks. Even with all wireless devices switched off the speaker would still not work reliably. Especially when I was walking in front of the transmitter the speaker would make a clicking noise every so often.

Another problem is that the transmitter would go into standby whenever there is a moment of silence in the movie which results in a screeching noise in the speakers. Then when the transmitter wakes up again there will be a loud plop. Hey, if you have fallen asleep then this may actually be a nice feature. Maybe I should contact the Polk Audio marketing people.

I would actually be willing to spend $250 on this speaker if I could get it to work. So I ended up returning this speaker and got me an Amphony 1600 wireless speaker kit and also purchased a pair of Klipsch speakers. With the Amphony, I get 80 Watts per speaker which is close to the Polk Audio rated wattage. It works at 5.8 GHz rather than 2.4 GHz and thus far I have not had any issues with interference.

I was looking for a surround speaker system for my new 72" Mitsubishi DLP. The TV came with a wireless Polk sub, so I purchased a pair of Polk Monitor 60's. The sound was good but I needed to add the rear surround. I could not find any customer reviews on the Polk F/X Wireless surround speaker, but I figured with my other Polk speakers, I would take the Plunge. I am extremely happy to say that right out of the box, I hooked up the transmitter to the receiver with the supplied wire, plugged the transmitter and the speaker in and I was enjoying great surround sound. I would recommend this speaker setup to anyone. The only problem I can see is if you have a computer or some other piece of equiptment that might give off some energy that will interfere with the wireless. I had a computer monitor that was plugged in near by that was giving me some popping noises. Moved the monitor, no more problems. Love the speakers, Thank's Polk..

My experience with this Polk speaker has been great! The small unobtrusive speaker delivers a credible, enveloping surround field from behind my couch. My wife and I really appreciate the lack of wires to multiple speakers. As pointed out by another reviewer, the speaker will go into standby mode after ~10 - 15 minutes in the absence of detected signal but during normal non-stereo programs (Dolby Digital movies, football games, TV shows or anything with a surround track) it continues to operate. When it does go into standby mode, the speaker emits a low-level chirping noise which I don't find objectionable. As far as its operation in the presence of RF interference (like WiFi in particular), we have had as many as 4 laptops/smart phones operating simultaneously in the same room as the Polk f/x and the system hasn't misbehaved at all.
