I've had a JBL On Stage (the old model with no remote control), which I bought in March of 2005 for 130 dollars. The sound is great, detailed, lush, room-filling. But the new JBL On Stage is over 200 dollars so when I wanted to get my wife a speaker system for her iPod I researched the Polk Audio and decided to shell out $90 for it. Not quite as detailed as my JBL; nevertheless, the sound is strong and clear, especially at this price point. To get fuller sound, you're going to have to spend 200-300 dollars on the JBL, Bose, or Klipsch, but for under 100 for a unit you're going to be moving around a lot (my wife takes hers to her classroom), you're going to get excellent sound from the Polk.Update 3-15-07: I've noticed the JBL Soundstage is now often on sale for $125 on Amazon, which would make me give it a slight nod over the Polk.

i am extremely pickey about sound, and ive been looking for a fold up speaker system i can throw in a bag that sounds at least as good as the JBL. i was impressed with this. Its just a tad below the volume of the JBL orb, but it sounds good enough. My only complaint is that the sound is very directional. i can also plug my serius into it thru the aux in.

Dissapointing sound -- it tends toward a very "tinny" sound,

I like the size and quality of workmanship on my unit; however, the sound was actually quite dissapointing. I don't generally like a lot of Bass sound, but this unit doesn't even have enough for me. Instruments come out sounding "tinny" and it gets even more annoying at higher volumes. There are no treble or bass controls (only volume). Voices come out crystal clear -- so it is great if you like listening to podcasts and such. If you are a classical of jazz lover -- this is NOT the unit for you.
