Editorial Reviews

Barney Kessel, Shelly Manne, and Ray Brown represent the ultimate in their fields, constituting a rhythm section that here also provides brilliant solo interludes by all three members. Collectively, Kessel, Manne, and Brown won dozens of polls over the years; this record eloquently tells you why.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tonemandan's thoughts, November 23, 2000

Simply put this is one of the great guitar albums of all time. The first in a series of successful "poll winners" albums by this group, this stands out as the best one. Barney Kessell was one of the first jazz guitarists to record jazz guitar in a trio format like this. His swinging, boppish lines are hornlike, and yet intespersed with chordal interjections which suggest an entire big band. Ray Brown plays with rock solid time, inventive solos, and massive tone. Shelly Manne provides not only a swinging rhythmic foundation for the group but is a wellspring of musical ideas. This should be required listening for any aspiring musician. I was just that in 1975 when I first heard this album and it moved me to take up playing jazz guitar! I am still listening to this album today and it sounds just as fresh as the first time. Highly recommended.
