Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3ANothing is lost in the translation of this warm story of love, generosity, and friendship. Despite differences in religion, sex, and race, Patricia is best buddies with the Washington brothers. She likes nothing better than attending church services with them and their grandmother and then sitting down to one of Miss Eula's sumptuous Sunday dinners. The youngsters hatch a plan to buy the woman an Easter hat that she has admired and end up befriending the Russian Jewish milliner and selling their "Pysanky" eggs in his shop. The mixing of cultural traditions is a strong element in the story's climax and resolution. Polacco's signature mixed-media illustrations are as engaging as ever. A great read-aloud and an equally fine choice for book discussions on traditions, responsibility, and communal sharing of blessings.AMildred Rivera Said, Queens Borough Public Library, NY
