A Fun, Functional Play Set With Secrets and Surprises

The pet carousel spins with kid power and uses a wheel mechanism to showcase different animals in the window, so prospective pet owners can select their faves. The open-design elevator is decorated with animal-paw cutouts and moves easily between floors with the simple lift-and-lower mechanism. I initially bought this as a gift for my niece when I saw it as a lightning deal, but when it was delivered my 5-year old son begged to play with it! I relented, and soon my 7-year old son was playing with it as well. They were drawn to all the moving parts: swing, trap door, pet food dispenser, etc. Due to the very small parts I decided it wouldn't make a great gift for a three-year old anyway (not due to choking hazard, but more just being able to play without losing them).

Despite appearing very "girly", my boys love giving the pets baths, sending Polly down the slide, and especially getting food out of the dispensers. It's cute, well-built, and encourages open-ended play. This toy now occupies a special place in my son's closet (to make sure baby brother doesn't get ahold of it) and I'm looking for another Polly Pocket set to get him for Christmas!

This adorable set features lots of intricate parts that work well and are fun. The set doesn't fall apart during play, and unlike many other toys, you get the doll and accessories with this set. I love that! No extras to buy. My oldest daughter is eight, however and says she was into that kind of thing when she was five or six and maybe a young seven. The set does fold in a bit to store it on a shelf, but if you just throw it in a toy box, you'll loose all those small accessories. So, the only improvement I can think of would be for it to store better to prevent missing accessories.

My 5 year old girl is a fan of Polly Pocket. Not a huge fan, but enough that she shows interest. The Playtime Pet Shop Playset is a definite winner. The product is well constructed but as many of you know, Polly Pockets has an incredible number of small and loose parts in their entire product line (many are choking hazards so be aware). Our daughter frequently needs assistance getting some parts reattached, which is really no big deal. And, you will lose a lot of the little parts that find their way into your washing machine and down your vents. However, our daughter has a great deal of fun with this toy. I estimate the proper age range on this toy as 4-8.

The build quality of this product is good. I think you will find it will last a few years with normal wear and tear by a little girl. With boys in the house, it may not last as long.
