casts a bad light on blended families,
By
This review is from: PollyWorld (DVD)
My 5 year old adores Polly Pocket so of course this was a must have for us. I was pretty disgusted to watch and see that an evil stepmother to be plays a key role in the plot. Aren't blended families hard enough without reinforcing this stereotype in another movie? I'm not sure how the drama with Polly's dad getting remarried made the movie better and in fact really made my daughter question what would happen if her father got a "new wife."
The rest of the movie is fun and has lots of shopping, sugary sweet pop music and all the other girly stuff...just be aware of the weird dark cloud hanging over the plot ~ we could have done without the drama and seeing my daughter worry about a stepmother was a little uncomfortable - too much for a 5 year old.

Not recommended for the younger crowd,
This review is from: PollyWorld (DVD)
Although this movie is not bad, I think they missed with their target market. This movie would be appropriate for the 9+ market. It has been my observation that the biggest Polly fans are in the 4-7 age range.
My daughter (almost 5) LOVES Polly Pockets, so this was a must have for her. After watching it with her today, I wish I had read more reviews before purchasing it. The plot of the movie centers around Polly's father's fiancee wanting to get Polly off to boarding school so the fiancee can have the dad all to herself. The second theme is the competition between the good Polly and the bad Beth. The subject is just above the comprehension of most young kids.

(Very) Well Written,
A Kid's Review

I really like this movie and the storyline is great! It's about this 12-year-old girl named Polly, who she and her friends realize that their class has been chosen to be in their favorite reality TV show, "Roll Like That"! Team Pocket is against Team Beth, a snobby girl who is planning to win all the competitions and tries to become more popular than Polly! So you better buy/rent this amazing movie for your kids who like Polly Pocket!

Daughter loved it - I used it as a teaching tool,

My 6 year old daughter absolutely loves this movie. The music is good (I wish I could get the soundtrack for her), but I agree that the 'evil stepmother' theme may be reinforcing bad stereotypes for blended families. Beth (Polly's nemesis) is obsessed with 'popularity' and believes that winning at all costs will gain it for her. Also, Polly lives a jetset life, where shopping is important and her father builds and names a massive themepark for her. Polly is, however, a charismatic and selfless leader, putting the needs of others above her own desires.
There is a lot for parents to be concerned about in this movie, but, handled properly, it can be a useful tool. It is a showcase of positive and negative characters. The movie provided some valuable teaching moments about competition, intention, greed, 'popularity', leadership, deviousness, etc. I was also able to point out that the dad had dropped the ball by keeping Lorelei a secret (for a year!) and not involving Polly in his future plans for the family or herself. Political correctness aside, the story worked for my advanced daughter, who has watched this thing at least 5 times since Christmas Day. The story can be simple enough for a younger girl, but have more depth for an older one as well. Recommended, as long as you watch with your daughter and discuss the variances form your own values.

PollyWorld: An Explanation,
By

Perhaps it would help many of you to know that this is a commercial, not a movie. It is designed as a commercial from the ground up. Products are placed, cross-platform design is integrated into the backgrounds, and, perhaps scariest of all, it's based on market research.
It might help to know that market research has shown that video entertainment product can extend the target group viability for an additional couple years. So while Polly Pocket maybe aimed at, for example 4-9 year olds...the presence of a video counterpart has shown to extend the marketability to, for example 12 year olds. As young children aspire to be older, an older sensibility is used on purpose. No one in high school wants to watch a movie about high school. This follows that premise. You might also be interested to know that market research has shown that "girls love elevators" or "girls love exploring hotels" or "girls aspire to be in rock bands"...that is why these elements are included in the plots...not to drive the plot...but to hit all the important marketing points. Also, this "movie" isn't the creation of the writer, the director, or the production team. This movie was created by an executive and the staff at Mattel. The production house is solely charged with making all of these things work. The reality of it is that, in the end, Mattel has to have something to put on a shelf to coincide with a toy release. It doesn't matter if it is good or bad...it just has to be present. I hope that illuminates some of the criticism...all valid...but all based on the idea that this was supposed to be a movie...it never was...it has always been a commercial.

OK for younger children, too,

Before I purchased Pollyworld for my granddaughters, ages 4 and 7, I read the reviews. One reviewer provided a good summary of the plot. One of the plot's main elements is Polly's dad's pending marriage. I was concerned that younger children who start playing with Polly Pockets at age three and play games on the Polly Pockets website might misunderstand what was happening. I have seen them get afraid when they watch shows where young children or young animals are separated from their families, and they think that might happen to them. After viewing the video with my granddaughters and watching their reactions, particularly the younger one's, I was glad to see that she figured out who the "bad guy" was and didn't have a problem with it. Polly displays courage and self-restraint in the face of adversity. She is the star of the show and a good role model, even for young children.

I was both dissapointed and extremely upset by the plot of this movie. As has been stated in other reviews, it casts a very bad light on blended families. What is more, it represents school as a competetive, social climbing atmosphere. The polly pocket toys are aimed at 4-7 year-olds. My daughter, who is just entering kindergarten, plays with them all the time. So I was flabbergasted by the negative portrayal of in-school relationships (good girl/bad girl stereotypes). Not a healthy introduction to what school is supposed to be about. Kids will experience bad by other children soon enough. There is no need to present it as part of an acceptable school environment. I do not recommend this video at all.

Stereotypes stepmoms,
This review is from: PollyWorld (DVD)
My kindergartner loves Polly Pocket and we have a large collection of the dolls that she's been playing with for the last two years. When I saw this movie pop-up on Netflix which we subscribe to, I decided to get it for her. Unfortunately, I discovered too late that this movie is unsuitable for young children ages 4-6, the very age group that the Polly dolls are targeted at. Firstly, the central plot revolves around Polly and her interactions with her dad and dad's fiancee. The soon-to-be stepmom is depicted as a mean, calculating, manipulative woman who is intent on packing Polly off to boarding school once she marries Polly's dad. I think the stereotypical evil stepmother belongs in the past together with all those fairy tales (thank goodness for modern adaptations which have avoided this stereotyping). Then there's Polly's rivalry with a girl named Beth which also made it rather unpleasant to watch, especially for a younger child who may not understand all of this. Save your money and avoid this if you can.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: PollyWorld (DVD)
This movie is about Polly Pocket and how she and her classmates including the Polly Pockets, get to go to Polly World. Then, she meets her dad's fiance Laurile, and is uncertain about the whole thing. Then, the Pockets do different things together and they meet Laurile and like her. Then Polly decides to be her friend but then, Samuel (her butler person) leaves and her dad announces she's going to boarding school. She feels sad at first but tries to make it the best last weekend with her Pockets. Thye Pockets compete for an event and they don't win but the secret is told that Laurile just wnats Polly's dad for his money and in the end, it turns out pretty good. I liked it.
