5.0 out of 5 stars This band should be where Fall Out Boy is, October 24, 2005
This review is from: Pollyanna (Audio CD)
(If you think about it, they should be, but FOB does suck and its probably better that Northstar isnt that big. It is kind of cool that Northstar is our best kept secret.)

I do not usually give 5 star reviews because it takes a hell of a lot to make a perfect album but in this case I had to. To those that know them, Northstar will be remembered as one of the most underrated bands of all time. This album is far better and more mature than any in its genre. The lyrics are so unique and the flawless delivery these guys give on this album is breathtaking. There is not one song I skip on here although if you had to pick the weakest song 99% would say it is Digital Me, which is still a good song. Here's my breakdown

For Members Only - awesome opener, fades in to a slick guitar riff. great lyrics - 10/10
Pollyanna - great song to name the album after; sounds like the most accessible song on the album - 9/10
American Living - this song is sooo good 10/10
The Pornographers Daughter - maybe my fav, love the lyrics 10/10
Like A.M. Radio - paints a cool picture as always 10/10
The Accident Underwater - album is not letting up 9/10
Two Zero Two - acoustic and beautiful 10/10
To My Better Angel - this song was on a soundtrack of some indie film, its a great rocker - 10/10
Between Horns and Halos - one of my favorites, makes you want to sing along 10/10
Digital Me - good song, slightly weaker, but still good enough not to skip it - 8/10
Rocket City - unbeleiveably good closer to a stellar album -"when i fall, dont forget me", 10/10

unfortunately this was a sign of things to come when they broke up. thinking back on it, its kind of sad that they ended on rocket city. a band with so much promise almost knowing they were going to fade into obscurity. this is a travesty that this band did not get more praise. Pollyanna is a great buy.

If you are just like me and dying for this band to get back together, we bot know that is not in the forseeable future so check out Nick, the lead singers new band Cassino at Cassinoband.com. they have 3 demos that are very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy Anniversary, April 18, 2005
By
This review is from: Pollyanna (Audio CD)
I bought this cd exactly one year ago, and listened to my first Northstar song at aorund this exact time that very day. I still remember the pervasive opening of For Members Only fluttering out of my speakers for the first time, and not knowing what to expect. They had been pushing the cd at the music festival I had ben attending the last 3 days. I can't tell you why I bought it. After all it was even two days before the official street datem so for all I knew it was crap. I decided to trust my blind insipration and I have never looked back.

I hardly ever write reviews for Amazon, or talk of Northstar to people outside the small community of people I know will appreciate them. But in the wake of their breakup this past week, I've realized what the world of music looks like in their absence. It's all garbage. Listen to Northstar. I can't really begin to give you an worthy description of how healthy it would be for the music scene to have Northstar on the cover of Rolling Stone with a big fat Grammy and major label record deal. There is an undeniable void, that I was at first inspired to fill with my own music, but there's more to the mission than that...

It's been exactly a year since I dubbed Northstar the most underrated band on the face of the Earth, and it's a crying shame. The obscurity of their existence has led them to wipe the slate clean in the hopes that their reemergence will fulfill the promise of success in the eye of their genius. I know I won't watch the former guys of Northstar go unnoticed in their incarnations to come, but unfortunately this doesn't only involve a core base of fans. I have heard perhaps a thousand people talk about Northstar and not until that reviewer on April 5 has there been a negative comment. If that's the demographic of prospective fanbase in the mainstream, then I urge you all to buy 100 copies of their cds and distribute them at will.

I've learned one thing from the brilliance of their attitude towards what they do, and it's unsurprising that Nick Torres captures it in shameless relevance "Just forget all about fate, while I unlock this gentleman's promise: With flesh like fire, but it lacks a color and chemical laughs that fly around like drama." --Northstar II 1:1.

It's been a year for me, and I'm ready to forget about fate. Lets start taking some initiative. The least we can do is color in the lines. They certainly painted the prettiest picture in black and white, but shade is starting to matter outside my head...

"Just don't leave me like this, because I need wonder..."

5.0 out of 5 stars so is this how it ends?, August 15, 2005
This review is from: Pollyanna (Audio CD)
wow they deserved more popularity than what they got but it was a good run. most people who know of northstar know what i mean. originality is present here. i'm very gald i got to hear this music and have a band bring elgant lyrics with rock, punk, emo and indie. taking back sunday yeah they're probably more catchy at times but northstar you can get so much more. it's just something that will always be in your cd rotation.

you should definately buy this cd if you don't have it, there will be no regrets

5.0 out of 5 stars take it from TBS Northstar is "the best band ever", October 7, 2004
This review is from: Pollyanna (Audio CD)
ok, maybe that is a slight overstatement. but they could develop into one of the best with soem time. Pollyanna is one awesome record. I espcially like the Tyler's guitar, he wails, and sometimes seems to compete for attention with Nick Torres's guitar and voice. it doesnt all blend in together like some bands, there is so much contrast in the guitars and vocals you will confuse yourself. you'll think "should i sing the lyrics or humm the melody of the guitars". that is saying alot becasue nick's voice and writing style is recognizable anywhere. the way he sings is very unique, most will love it, some will hate it. what you cant hate are his lyrics. he uses more literaty devices, lyrical irony, innudenos and analogys than i have read in books all though college.

the melody of the songs will stick in you head for years. your not human if you dont walk around everywhere humming verses or riffs. they are catchy not poppy. some may argue pollyanna as poppy. i take that as an insult, but i can kind of see where you are comming from. pollyanna is a little "poppier" than ITTL. but nothing near mainstream or most of the crap on KISS FM.

my personal favs are the pornographers daughter, 2 zero 2, the accident underwater, and rocket city.

i dont have to address anyone who owns ITTL, cause i know you already have pollyanna. i just want to say i love the much improved recording quality of this cd. triple corwn realized Northstar is going places and put soem extra money into their recording needs.

i have bought alot of albums in 2004. this is my most valued buy of 2004 by far.

northstar hasn't jumped on the screaming bandwagon, and there is no screamo on this cd. some may think its "soft" becasue of that. but if you see them live, you will be dumbfounded, their live show is full of moshable energy.

5.0 out of 5 stars You will never forget this album, April 22, 2008
This review is from: Pollyanna (Audio CD)
I promise you, give this album a listen or two and you will get hooked on at least 6 songs. Once you over listen to those the others will have grown on you. Then you will realize that this album is an absolute masterpiece all the way through. This is the only obscure band to have an album in my top 10 and I am not ashamed to say it. This band had more potential than you could imagine, but its a shame they had to come to an end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best kept secrets, February 28, 2007
This review is from: Pollyanna (Audio CD)
I agree that it's better this band fall into obscurity rather, than the limelight. I had the good fortune of seeing them live just months before they broke up, and they were superb. Great melodies, and Nick Torres' wordplay is excellent. They will be missed, but Cassino has the potential to be better which is very encouraging.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ahhh yes, finally..., August 6, 2004
This review is from: Pollyanna (Audio CD)
In the booklet for Taking Back Sunday's "Tell All Your Friends," it is claimed that Northstar are the greatest band ever. So, that's a little bit of a stretch, but this album is AMAZING. They play a combination of old Saves the Day, Taking Back Sunday, and Brand New, all fused with a little originality. I highly recommend this album based solely on the fact that the vocals are amazing and lyrics are exceptional. Buy it, listen to it...you'll love it.

Wow, this is probably the best CD to come out this year so far. I think this one is actually better than ITTL. With the whole 'emo' hype thing going on lately, this is probably one of the most underrated bands. I absolutely adore the singers voice and all the songs are catchy as hell. My favorite song on here is probably Two Zero Two, which is probably the best acoustic song ever made. The only song I don't like is 'digital me', it just sounds like they kind of threw it together real quick. Anyways, get this, it's worth every penny.
