5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Be Discouraged by Bad Reviews...My Daughter Loved This
Don't be discouraged by the bad reviews... My 3 year old daughter got this kit as a Christmas present and she loves it. Of all the different toys she got (including a Hop Ball, Dora Magical princess doll, Fisher Price Voice Warp recorder, etc), this one is played with the most. I love the fact that she can do it by herself and how non-messy it is, which frees up some of...

1.0 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment!
The "paint" doesn't work very well, and the sponges fall apart. We actually use it for finger painting instead! Save your money.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worthy of the company name, December 12, 2004

My 5-year-old son saw this product advertised and was so excited by the concept. I trusted the brand name and ordered it for him. We were so disappointed with the flimsiness of the product as we pulled it out of the box, the tiny portions of paint and paper included. But when we tried to actually use the sponges as advertised, dragging them across the paints, then painting with them, our disappointment grew. We paint together quite a bit, and after one 10-minute session, this thing was abandoned by both mother and child. Buy the biggest box of Crayola crayons, a simple old-fashioned set of watercolors, a nice pad of paper, and a decent-quality paintbrush instead ... you could get that all for the price of this set.

This is cheap, cheap, cheap. Sounded like a great concept, but it was extremely frustrating to use - - the sponges don't work well at all, and you can't get any real "color" from them. The paper provided was small and flimsy. I felt bad for my son as we worked together to try and paint. I can't believe I bought him such a junkie set. I agree with the other reviewer, invent in a good brush and a "real" paint set.

1.0 out of 5 stars So embarrassed..., January 14, 2005

My nephew has the real "as seen on TV" set of watercolors and it is great! My 5 yo daughter and 3 yo son loved playing it at my sister's house. When I saw this set by Crayola, I purchased 2 for gifts and my son added it to his Christmas list. When Santa brought it, we were SOOOOO disappointed and it quickly made it's way to the back of the closet. The sponges aren't nearly big or thick enough and it was very frustrating for both of my kids. I had a very hard time making a rainbow with it! Now, I am so embarrassed that I gave the other two as gifts to two friends' children. That is the last time I simply trust the brand name and don't testdrive a toy first. This is a piece of junk and I think Crayola has a lot nerve charging $20 for it.

I wish I had read the reviews here before coming across this in the store and buying it! This toy is flimsy, cheaply made and doesn't last. The sponge brushed hardly last through one session with the toy. Crayola should be embarressed for making and marketing this toy, especially for the price point! It is junk and I wish I could get my money back!

I bought this toy for my 3 year old son, he was very excited about it, but wasn't excited any more when he started to paint w/it. He knew how to paint w/it and everything, but that colors weren't as bright or pretty as it was on T.V., after playing w/it for about 20 min. He never touched it again, in fact he threw it away!

1.0 out of 5 stars HUGE WASTE OF MONEY!!!, January 19, 2005

very suprisingly poorly made toy and not for the age they have specified...possible would work for much older. The colors make a big mess, small pieces are easily lost/hard to keep in order and the pens dont write very well when you wet them. If I didnt get this online and we hadnt made a MESS of it trying to work it, you can bet it would have been returned because Im very unhappy with this purchase!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars AWFUL, March 30, 2007
This review is from: Crayola Multi Watercolors (Toy)
My daughter was so excited to have one of these after seeing commercials a million times over on how easy it was and what pretty pictures can be created. It didn't work at all. It left everything a brown mess. To get the sponges wet enough to pick up color, it was still messy and most times it never picked up enough color to "paint" with. Not worth it. My daughter learned with this product that commercials can be very deceiving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Be Discouraged by Bad Reviews...My Daughter Loved This, January 10, 2005
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars

I love the fact that she can do it by herself and how non-messy it is, which frees up some of mommy's time to catch up on other chores, etc.

This watercolor kit includes 6 chalk-type watercolor "crayons" in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet, which fit neatly into the tray. There is a removeable sponge which can be taken out (we just fill the area with water, which seems to work better for us), and 6 sponge "Crayons." The three narrow sponges are located on the front of the tray and fit neatly into the door compartment during storage. Then, there is a small area underneath the tray where 3 more sponge refills are located (with wider tips), for more creativity.

My daughter loves dipping the sponges into the little water/sponge area and creating dozens of pictures. As any good artist must know, it is best to rinse the sponge applicators each time before swishing across another color. Watercolors (as the name implies) are intended to have a light, almost impressionistic effect, and they are soo much neater than fingerpainting. There are no messy fingertips to clean up, no paint everywhere, etc.

The watercolor chalks are all refillable, as are the sponge tip applicators. The only thing I would recommend possibly changing is to invest in some good watercolor paper... We started out just using regular 8 x 11 computer paper (cut in half) when my daughter ran out of the kit paper, but it just doesn't absorb the wetness as well as a good paint-quality paper. You can find this thicker art paper anywhere from Target to Walmart (or an art supply store) and can cut the paper down to fit the alloted space. The applicators do take some wear if your little one is an aggressive painter (like mine is). However, there are replacement kits available I belive, and the sponge tips do pop on and off for easy access. You can practice with the 3 extra tips located underneath the kit, which will give your little one more hours of fun before you need to buy new ones. The chalks may look small, but they last forever. Even after 20 - 30 pictures, my daughter has barely made a dent in them. They are tough and durable, designed to last for a long time. You will need new sponge tips before you will need new watercolor chalks.

This kit is great for traveling, on-the-go, or just hours of fun at home. I love how easy it is to use, and how very little mess there is to clean up afterwards. Simply dump out the water area, rinse a bit, and snap shut. The applicator "crayons" all have their own special place to snap in, and the paper clips on the front. The watercolor chalks are removable and snap out, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you are trying to replace them.

I would definitely recommend this item to anyone who has a child who loves to create, and loves the quality products Crayola provides.

Mommy of one, Autumn (3 yrs old)
