for the last several years there has been a growing consensus among the industrialized nations of the world of the need for research to convert underutilized cultural into new uses that add value to agricultural commodities. It is projected that new use research will provide new markets for low value agricultural commodities. Also the research could enhance rural development because new industries may seek to locate close to the supply of newly developed raw materials. Furthermore, new use research that reduces crop surpluses will reduce land set aside by the governments, thereby releasing tax dollars for other programs. These resources are also needed as sources of energy. Moreover, many of the newly developed materials will replace materials that degrade slowly when composted. Many of the biopolymers derived from agricultural commodities often biodegrade rapidly when composted.
This book has well past the symposium upon which it was based was assembled to gather together leading scientists and technologists working in the field of polymers derived from agricultural materials.
