Editorial Reviews

Rik brewed up something very special for this newest release, his third for HipSync. After he garnered quite a bit of critical acclaim for last years' "Isomorphism", Rik assembled a new touring ensemble featuring multi-reedest James DeJoie, phenomenal double-bassist James Whiton, and longtime co-conspirator Simon Grant (on drums). Rik took this group of jazz camandos into a recording studio just before their debut gig at Vancouver's New Music West Festival and recorded what we think is an awe-inspiring collection of re-orchestrations of his material going all the way back to an early composition he originally wrote in 1994 for acid-jazz ensemble Jackhammer Trio.

We were so taken by this new recording, that we asked renown guitarist and writer Dennis Rea to write the liner notes for us. Here's an excerpt of Dennis' thoughts on this remarkable release:

"Defined as the ability to assume different forms, "polymorphism" is a particularly apt characterization of the quartet's omni-directional musical peregrinations. Unlike so many latter-day jazz musicians who are content merely to recycle shopworn standards or indulge in lazy grooves, Wright and Co. achieve an increasingly rare balance between challenging original compositions, disciplined ensemble interplay, and expansive improvisation, deftly straddling the line between form and freedom. The quartet's singular take on jazz is refreshingly free of clichés, and its willingness to embrace risk conveys a palpable sense of excitement and discovery."

What more is there to say?
