5.0 out of 5 stars Dreamy, Intelligent Songs That Move You
I recently re-discovered this gem after several years of having it gather dust on my shelf, and boy am I glad I did. It is a real masterpiece from an under-rated band.

3.0 out of 5 stars You could do worse
OK, people, I'm talking to you. No five star review, I go by Rolling Stone standards and this is a three star album. Several good tracks but there wouldn't be so many remixes of the songs on other albums if they were happy with the final product. PDP was still cutting their techno teeth and didn't refine their sound until Electric Plumawhatever. But, honestly you could do...

I recently re-discovered this gem after several years of having it gather dust on my shelf, and boy am I glad I did. It is a real masterpiece from an under-rated band.

Poi weaves together guitars, drums, violins, flutes, cellos, pianos and more to create an enchanting and driving sound -- one that is never as dischordant as you would expect. Each of the 11 songs is strong on its own, but together they play out like a supremely well-crafted symphony. "Complicated" forces you to get to your feet and dance, while "Pomegranate" is a more mellow exploration of sounds. The lyrics to "God's Gallipoli" are worth memorizing for their power. This is a diverse and challenging album that may not be immediately accessable to all listeners, but I urge you to stick with it. You will be richly rewarded.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most interesting mix of music you will ever hear, October 21, 1998

Poi Dog is the best local(Chicago) band that you will ever hear. If you like Dave Matthews, you will love Poi Dog. Every time I listen to this CD it gets me moving and shaking. They make upbeat songs that make you want to get up and have some fun. Once you listen you will be hooked for life. So all you people that do not have this CD, get off your ass and go buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars unclassifiably great, September 16, 2006

This review is from: Pomegranate (Audio CD)
I have very broad music tastes, and I find a bit of every genre in this album, which might be one of the most diverse albums to be classified as 'rock'. The lyrics are especially wonderful. Don't miss "Sandra at Beach" if you're listening to clips before purchasing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Cd That Get's You Moving!, February 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Pomegranate (Audio CD)
I first encountered Poi Dog Pondering this past summer when they opened for the Dave Matthews Band. I loved the energy of their show and the original sound of their music. I picked up this CD and love it. It's easy to listen to and is fun and up-beat. The music ranges from soft, quiet music like "Pomegranate" and "Sandra At The Beach" to the optimistic, jazzy tunes of "Complicated" and "Diamonds and Buttermilk"

5.0 out of 5 stars This one made me a Poi fan., November 25, 1998

Being from the Chicago area originally, I'd known of the band quite a while before this record was released. This was the first one I bought, however. "Complicated" hooked me, but it's "Catacombs" and "Big Constellation" that stick in my head most. I got to see them when they played in Champaign last year, and it was one of the best shows I've seen in a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive Poi Dog -- an excellent intro to the band, August 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Pomegranate (Audio CD)
If you like rock, soul, dance and orchestral music, Poi Dog is the group for you. This album is a wonderful amalgamation of their journey from a more acoustic, folky sound towards dance music, with as ever a strong focus on incredible lyrics. Poi Dog is definitely the kind of band you fall into when you see them live, but Pomegranate is the closest thing to a Poi show as any album could be. (Find the band's web site to order their double live CD, Liquid White Light, which came out in '97.)

This was the first album of theirs that has me hooked. You'll find yourself playing this album over and over again! After seeing them in concert, I couldn't get enough of them.(I've seen them 20 times already!)

5.0 out of 5 stars On permanent rotation in my CD player, May 31, 1998

Complex lyrics, a strange and juicy blend of instruments, half a dozen styles, and one hell of a groove. This is the best so far from a band which redefines "eclectic" and puts on one of the most high-energy live shows I've ever seen. If you can listen to this album without dancing around the room, check your pulse, 'cause you might be dead.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is Poi Dog Pondering - the Chimera, February 12, 2008

Poi Dog Pondering is a hard band to label, harder yet to ignore.
If you've never heard of them, this album and 'Liquid White Light' are terrific starts.
After you explore the contents of this album you will find that you will WANT to move to Chicago - despite the weather - just to be where Poi Dog Pondering performs live.
Frank and the team are amazing!

I was introduced to this band after Volo Volo and I wish I could have followed them from their inception.

5.0 out of 5 stars I want what lovers own, October 16, 2007
By
This review is from: Pomegranate (Audio CD)
Well, this is a pretty technical album. I love it and I'm not a big fan of techno pop. What makes this album praise worthy? Because the lyrics are intelligent and you never know what style the next song will be. It's like watching the first five minutes of The Simpsons...it can go anywhere from there. The band has access to jazzy saxi as well as classical violi. They aren't afraid to howl at the moon either so there you go.

This is a spiritual uplifting album. Sandra at the Beach is gorgeous with the way the surf beats her chest. Her lover watches her every move, as all lovers do. As maybe a loving God does too?
