Totally enjoyable, and worth losing sleep over to continue reading. Every emotion known is felt while reading this book, from wonder at the sights, sounds and smells of the country, to the emotions toward the children and all the characters, who are so well-developed you feel you know them personally. The book leaves you wondering what you would do in situations, and long after you close the book, you think about the characters and worry about their welfare as if they were yours to care about! In some instances, you almost want to be there to manage the situation, because you know you may do things differently. This is a wonderful escape to a land and situations most of us would never have the good fortune to have. Nick writes what he knows, and his knowledge is vast, teaching us in subtle ways, about a people as only he knows. On to book 2.

The Pomelo Tree opens with a realistic scene involving ill behaved children on a long flight and immediately captures the reader's interest. My experience working with children in the public school arena did not quite prepare me for how precocious the young Nigel is. The novel grips the reader in its clutches with the exotic location, the gripping characters, and our hero's voice narrating the story. I was sorry to read the last page and literally hungered for the next book. As a writer myself, I highly recommend this fascinating book.
