5.0 out of 5 stars What's wrong with plastic?
I bought one of these without the stand over a year ago and have enjoyed it very much. So, I decided to try this one with a stand. I've tried it only a few times, but so far it works great. Another reviewer talked a lot about the cheap materials but said nothing about how it works. Actually, it doesn't look that bad, either. The stand is of sturdy plastic, but the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but be careful
First of all, its' a great price, but like the title says "be careful" with it. Mine broke at the vertical adjustment. If you buy this item, be sure to lift the lever straight UP (not back) and the leverage is better. This is how I broke mine (after about 20 bottles opened) It would be helpful to place the opener on a surface lower than a kitchen counter for the best...

The stand is of sturdy plastic, but the gears and most other moving parts are of a chrome-covered metal. And it has some nice little extras. For example, there's a suction cup on the bottom that attaches the stand to a smooth surface, and the metal clamps have embedded rubber grips. All in all, I think it'll stand up to a considerable amount of use. Even if it lasts just a few months, can you really complain when it only cost you $10???

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection!, January 1, 2005
This review is from: Pomerantz Wine Wizard Tabletop Wine Opener, Black/Chrome (Kitchen)
Not sure what the last person was talking about, I was worried.. $9.99 has to be cheap plastic.. WOW! Not even, were stepping up from a normal hand held (not plastic) solid model. This had a solid handle and frame, didn't suck onto our tile, but works in the stove top and other areas. God forbid us using our minds. Good enough and wow, so easy. I have many friends who have the cheap plastic hand held ones, well you get what you pay for, well not in this case! Really solid, took it to all the holidays parties, everyone wanted try it.. mmmmm wine. I'll gladly make a video or send pics of how GREAT it is.

If you buy this item, be sure to lift the lever straight UP (not back) and the leverage is better. This is how I broke mine (after about 20 bottles opened) It would be helpful to place the opener on a surface lower than a kitchen counter for the best leverage.
I found the vacuum base so weak that I usually didn't bother with it.
Would I buy this again? Probably not. Considering how much I enjoy wine, I am going to spring for a higher quality opener.

4.0 out of 5 stars so it is plastic....and the point is????, July 17, 2005

Unlike several previous reviews, the fact that this is plastic just means that it is affordable! Geez, if it were metal it certainly would not be under $20.00. Having said that, the Wine Wizard works as advertised and should last indefinatly with a little common sense. The vacum base only works when it is placed on a completely smooth service but with practice I found that I can use it without having to depend on the vacumn feature. Also I have found that if I leave the handle in the "OPEN" position, it is less top heavy and less likely to tip over. Bottom line, I love mine and have given several as gifts.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mine broke after about 5 uses..., September 17, 2005

The first time I used this opener I thought, "What a great opener! The leverage is great!" The 2nd-5th time it pushed the cork into the bottle each time and the last time I used it the adjustable neck broke.

I gave it 3 stars because I fully intend to return it and perhaps the next one will work better.

We received this for a gift, and after using it for the first time, we discovered that we never will or have had a problem pulling any cork in any wine bottle. A better mouse trap

We've had it for 6 months - use it about 3 times a week - like it very much - We don't use the suction base - totally unnecessary - and we don't fasten down the bottle height adjustment, we just lift the top so it rests on the bottle and work the lever.

Amazon just had them on sale so we bought 6 to give as gifts. That should tell you what we think of the things.

1) It does the job without much effort
2) Fairly folid construction...the weakest point is where the adjustable shaft locks down with a wing-nut type clamp, but careful use should avoid any problem. The metal parts are cast light alloy...could be used on a motorcycle ;-).
3) They give you an extra cork screw...cool
4) The suction works if you wipe a smooth surface [eg, stove top] with a moist sponge first
5) "Made in China" is hard to avoid these days...so I can't fault them for that.
I took a star off for the weak joint & tempermental suction...overall, it is a great value and does what it's supposed to do!

4.0 out of 5 stars Cheap but functional, May 27, 2005
By
This review is from: Pomerantz Wine Wizard Tabletop Wine Opener, Black/Chrome (Kitchen)
The base is plastic and seems pretty cheap but I must say .. it works great. The only issue I have had with it is the suction base can take a good 3 or 4 times for it to stick. But what do you expect for under $10. I recommend this product, easy to use

5.0 out of 5 stars so far I love it, March 18, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

The last two wine openers I bought broke after a few months so I desided to try this one. So far it is great. Works so easy & keeps the bottle in place so it won't walk all over the counter. I have only had it a few weeks so I am just hopeing that it was work in a few months but for now it is great.
