Book Description

September 19, 2003
This novel centers around the weekend party that Alice Barton, a shy English girl, attends at Pomfret Towers, the magnificent seventeenth-century home of Lord Pomfret. Alice's mother, Mrs. Barton, has decided that now is the time that timid, home-centered Alice, must learn to socialize. Alice, mustering all of her courage, agrees to join the gathering at the elegant Towers. Though painfully shy at first, Alice soon breaks out of her shell. She begins to mingle with the other young guests, develops friendships, and even falls in love. The story also portrays the competition between two mothers (Phoebe's and Alice's), both authors. Mrs. Rivers comes up short.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"There's no stopping after one novel." -- New York Times

From the Publisher

This is Angela Thirkell at her best. She gives us an insider's look at the pomp, ceremony and general goings-on in a pre-World War II English county home. The competition between Phoebe's and Alice's mothers is intense. Both are published authors, and both are moving their daughters to best advantage. "Matrimonial score: two goals, one miss."

Mrs. Rivers, an exceedingly succesful novelist, comes up short on several fronts. Her son and daughter test her wits and social acumen. It is all good fun for those not receiving the brunt of this comedy of manners. And Pomfret Towers is the quintessence of manners gone awry.

Thirkell's stylish prose and generous, yet acutely observant, comedy offers a feast of reading that is cultivated, nourishing, refreshing and restorative.

This review is from: Pomfret Towers: a novel (Paperback)
I picked this up at least 10 years ago. It was my first Angela Thirkell and I still think it is the best. It stands alone beautifully. I reread this book at least once a year, usually during the summer out on my porch swing. The conversations are very witty - reminds me of PG Wodehouse at times. I love running into the characters again in other Thirkell novels as I am very attached to them!
